Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team was unable to upset defending Mid-American Conference champion Ohio Saturday night, losing to the Bobcats in three sets, 26-24, 25-16, 25-21. The Falcons defended well and had a set point in the first frame but were unable to take advantage of the opportunity.
"We outdug a very good defensive team by 12," BGSU head coach Danijela Tomic said on the team's 63-51 advantage. "Unfortunately, we couldn't create enough swings and we couldn't score enough to beat Ohio. They are solid at every position and for us to beat them, we needed more players to score for us."
Freshman Nicole Slimko led the Falcons with 13 kills and senior Kelsey Bates added 11 on a .409 attack percentage. Sophomore Jelena Sunjic had eight kills but the Falcons' 38 kills as a team were 10 fewer than Ohio. And it was the Bobcats' service game that helped affect BGSU's offense as Ohio recorded six aces and kept Bowling Green from getting into its offensive system.
"Ohio put a lot of pressure on us with their service game," Tomic said. "We have to serve receive really well in order to run the offense we need to run. They had two outstanding jump servers who put a lot of pressure on our serve receivers. On the other hand, they are a very good serve receiving team. We knew it was going to be hard to take them out of system and we were unable to do that."
Despite those problems, Bowling Green stood toe-to-toe with Ohio early on. Slimko and Sunjic had back-to-back kills during a three-point run that put the Falcons ahead 10-6. Ohio clawed back to tie the score at 15-15 and the two teams traded scores for much of the remainder of the frame. The Bobcats got a Kelly Lamberti kill to go ahead 23-22 but the Falcons used a timeout and got a service error followed by an attack error from Ohio to take a 24-23 lead. Bowling Green had the chance to earn the win but Ohio picked up a block to tie the score and won the set on a kill and attack error.
The Falcons were unable to produce another opportunity as strong as in the first set but BGSU did have chances in the third. After losing the second 25-16, Bowling Green came out of the intermission and quickly scored five of the first six points of the third. A kill by Slimko put the Falcons ahead 11-5 but Ohio battled back with four straight points to get within two.
Bowling Green still led by two at 14-12 before the Bobcats used a 4-0 run to take a lead they would not relinquish. Ohio led 23-21 before a block and kill ended the match.
"Today, I thought we did many things well," Tomic said. "We have to continue improving, continue making baby steps. We already look like a different team. I'm optimistic about how this team is developing and if we continue doing this, we'll be playing some really good volleyball in the second half of the MAC."
Bowling Green hit .198 for the match compared to .241 for Ohio. Sophomore libero Madeline Garda had 20 digs and senior setter Erica Fullenkamp posted a double-double with 30 assists and 13 digs. In fact, the Falcons had six players with at least five digs.
Ohio improves to 13-4 overall and 6-0 in MAC play with the win. Bowling Green falls to 4-14 overall and 1-5 in conference. The Falcons will be on the road over the next weekend, playing at Central Michigan Thursday at 7 pm and at Eastern Michigan Saturday at 7 pm. BGSU will then return home to host rival Toledo on Oct. 24 at 7 pm.
