Falcons Open Practice For 2013-14 Season
September 30, 2013 | Men's Basketball
Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team opened practice for the 2013-14 season Monday. BGSU returns eight letterwinners from a team that went 13-19 a year ago and 7-9 in Mid-American Conference play.
The Falcons are 23-9 at home in the first two years of the Stroh Center, including a strong 11-5 mark a year ago. Bowling Green returners five players who started at least one game in 2012-13, including seniors Cam Black and Craig Sealey.
At 6-feet-10, Black started 29 games and shot 48 percent from the field. He was second on the team in blocked shots and third in rebounds. Sealey played in 29 games as a junior, averaging 3.1 points and 2.0 rebounds per contest.
The Falcons have a strong junior class, led by returning starter Chauncey Orr. The 6-4 forward started 31 games and averaged 7.5 points and 3.7 rebounds, while making 35 percent of his three-point attempts. Richaun Holmes broke BGSU's single-season blocked shot record in his first year with the Falcons in 2012-13, swatting 73 shots, while averaging 6.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
Junior Jehvon Clarke is the leading candidate for the starting point guard spot. A dynamic player, Clarke has shown flashes in his first two years, most notably when he scored a career-high 14 points against Michigan State. Anthony Henderson adds tremendous scoring ability to the Falcons as a junior and started nine games as a sophomore. Walk-on Damarkeo Lyshe will also compete for playing time as a point guard.
The sophomores include Spencer Parker and transfer Josh Gomez, who sat out last year after transferring from Iona. Both have potential to add to the depth the Falcons have.
Three freshmen are expected to work for time as well. JD Tisdale, a 6-4 point guard, Zach Denny, a 6-2 shooting guard who led Ohio in scoring as both a junior and senior, and Garrett Mayleben, a 6-9 forward, will all look to find ways to contribute.
Bowling Green will host the Orange and Brown Scrimmage Oct. 19 at 12 pm in the Stroh Center before an exhibition game against Malone on Nov. 2 at 2 pm. BGSU will then open the regular season at home against Earlham Nov. 9 at 2 pm.
