BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - For the 13th consecutive year, the Bowling Green State University volleyball team has been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association for academic excellence. A record number 622 college and high school teams were recognized in 2012-13. The AVCA recognizes volleyball programs across the country who maintain a team GPA of 3.30 or higher on a 4.0 scale. The BGSU volleyball team earned a 3.55 team GPA in the spring semester.
"I am very, very proud of our team that we once again received the AVCA Academic Award for the 13th consecutive year," head volleyball coach Danijela Tomic said. "We put a high emphasis on academics. Our student-athletes know that when they come to BG they're going to get a great education and graduate. They not only work hard for us in the gym, but more importantly in the classroom."
Bowling Green is tied with Toledo and Denver for the second-longest active streak of earning the award, behind just Indiana State who has been recognized in 15 straight years. The AVCA instituted this award in 1993.
"Excellence doesn't happen by accident, either on the court or in the classroom," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "It takes consistent preparation, relentless effort, and determined leadership. A full year of academic achievement, by an entire team of individual students, is a remarkable achievement. What better way to start a new season than with a celebration of an award so emblematic of all that is necessary for sustained success."
The 2012-13 recognition marks the 14th time in the 21-year history of the award that the Falcons have been honored for academic excellence by the AVCA.
