BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team hosted a fundraiser called "Night At Center Ice", which took place at the BGSU Ice Arena, on Thursday night (Aug. 22).
It was head coach Chris Bergeron's first official fundraiser in his four years, which turned out to be a success, as over 128 Falcon faithful arrived at the arena for a night full of events.
"It's always nice to get the Falcon family together and we felt the night went great," Bergeron said. "We really appreciate people taking the time to come and support us."
The night began with a social hour lasting from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Drinks and appetizers were provided out in the main lobby before having the main meal on the small ice rink. The Falcon community heard from President Dr. Mary Ellen Mazy, Director of Athletics Chris Kingston, and senior captain Camden Wojtala, as Bergeron hosted the event during progressive dinner.
"It was awesome to see all of the people invested in our program come out and support our program," Wojtala said. "It was great to interact with them."
As the night continued, Andrew Wallace and Brett Mohler sold hockey pucks throughout the night to the people for a chance to shoot pucks into empty nets on the main ice rink. The pucks were sold for 20 dollars for three shots.
With a chance to win a road trip with the Falcons on the line, Tom Blakley earned a spot in the "sudden death" overtime after making three straight shots, eventually earning the rights to travel with the team for an away series this season.
The night concluded in the Falcons lounge, as Bergeron and players showed off their reconstructed locker room and lounge area, providing the public with dessert and coffee.
"We got to show off our building and all of the improvements we've made," Bergeron said. "I think it was a victory."
Some notable appearances at the fundraiser include; Jack Vivian, who was the first head coach in BGSU history, current mayor and alumni of BGSU, Dick Edwards.
BGSU will now turn their attention to Saturday, Oct. 5, as the Falcons will host Wilfred Laurier in an exhibition game. The regular season will begin the following weekend, as BGSU will travel to Schenectady, NY to take on Union College.
