Pleger Named MAC’s Outstanding Field Athlete

Cleveland, Ohio – Bowling Green redshirt sophomore Brooke Pleger was named the Mid-American Conference's Most Outstanding Field Athlete Saturday, following the conclusion of the MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Pleger earned the honor after winning the MAC Championship in the hammer throw and setting a new meet record in the process. She threw the hammer 216-feet-3 Thursday to take first place in the event, becoming the first BGSU student-athlete to win an event at the conference championship since 2005.
Throughout the year, Pleger has consistently been one of the top hammer throwers in the country, currently ranking fifth in the nation and second in the East region. She had a personal best throw of 219-9 at the Northeast Ohio Invitational and has thrown at least 212-6 in every meet she has competed in this year. Only ten other hammer throwers in the country have even reached that mark once.
Pleger earned MAC Field Athlete of the Week honors three times this year and has won the hammer throw at the Raleigh Relays and the Ashland Alumni Open as well as the Northeast Ohio Invitational and the MAC Championships. He has also qualified to compete in the USA Track and Field Outdoor National Championships June 19-23 in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Mid-American Conference began awarding a Most Outstanding Performer award for women's track and field in 1986 and began awarding two Most Outstanding Performer awards in 2006 (one for track events and one for field events). Pleger is the first BGSU student-athlete to earn the award.
Pleger will compete in the NCAA East Preliminary Round May 23-25 in Greensboro, N.C. The top 12 finishers at that event will advance to the NCAA National Championships June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore. BGSU has not had a national championship qualifier since Kerri McClung did so in 2005. The Falcons have not had an All-American in women's track and field since Stephanie Heldt in 1999.
