Bowling Green State University Athletics
Mark Shook Named Interim Director Of Athletics
April 03, 2013 | General

“In Mark's seven years at Bowling Green, he has exhibited excellence in guiding the academic support services and compliance departments,” Mazey said. “It is evident that his leadership will provide effective direction for the athletics department during this time of transition.”
Shook, a native of Rittman, Ohio, began at BGSU in 2006 and provides leadership and oversight of the comprehensive NCAA Compliance and Academic Support Services program. He also serves as the sport administrator for women's tennis and is responsible for the supervision, evaluation and overall management of the program. His other main duties include the administration of the Falcon Leadership Academy as well as the Falcon Intern Program for exhausted eligibility student-athletes who are working to complete their degree.
Shook was selected to attend the Sports Management Institute Executive Program beginning in the summer of 2012. The program is intended to meet the needs of athletic administrators in mid-to top-level management positions and includes sessions addressing key areas including management strategy, legal and ethical behavior, marketing, media relations and management of financial, physical and human resources.
“I am honored that Dr. Mazey has asked me to serve in this role,” Shook said. “I am confident that our strong team of administrators and coaches will continue to put our student-athletes first in our decision-making during this time of transition. I have been a part of many special things that have happened here at BGSU during the past seven years and look forward to the future of our department and this University.”
Shook has served on the Leadership Advisory Board at BGSU and on a number of other campus committees as well. He was a member of the community program, Leadership BG, in 2007-08 and was inducted to Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, in the spring of 2008. In addition, he continues to serve as an instructor for the Student-Athlete Leadership course he helped develop in the spring of 2007. This course, offered only for student-athletes, enhances their effectiveness as student leaders through a leadership practices inventory and the study of various leadership styles to assist them in developing their own leadership potential as well as defining their own philosophy on leadership.
In July of 2006, Shook received the Professional Promise Award for Region III from the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A). The award honors professionals serving student-athletes who have shown extraordinary service to the N4A at the regional and/or national level and outstanding performance as an academic advisor, life skills coordinator and/or administrator. Shook is a graduate of the 2005 N4A Leadership Institute and has been a presenter at the N4A National Conference as well.
Prior to his tenure at Bowling Green, shook spent four years as an academic support services advisor in the athletics department at Purdue. He assumed that role in August of 2002 and was named an associate director of academic support services in the summer of 2005. Shook also spent a year as an academic mentor in the student-athlete support services office at Ohio State before moving on to Purdue.
After earning a bachelor's degree in secondary education from BGSU in 1992, Shook spent a decade as a high school teacher and coach in Ohio, in Lexington, Orrville and Creston. During that time, he also earned a master's degree in sport education from Ashland University in 2001.
Mark and his wife, Emily, reside in Bowling Green with their daughters Madeline, Marissa and Morgan.
