Detroit, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University softball team swept a doubleheader with Detroit- Mercy Tuesday evening, defeating the Titans by a score of 12-3 in game one and 9-1 in game two. The non-conference sweep improves the Falcons' overall record to 15-11, and increases Bowling Green's winning streak to three games.
Senior Paige Berger stole the show for the Falcons in game one, going 2-for-4 with two home runs and two RBI. Berger's two home runs pushed her career total to 33, breaking the Bowling Green all-time home run record, originally held by Hayley Wiemer. Fellow senior Adrienne Dick also belted two home runs, going 2-for-5 with a team-best four RBI. Senior Hannah Fulk also hit a home run in game one, while junior Katie Yoho led Bowling Green with three hits. Bowling Green's five home runs marked the most in a game since April 27, 2012, when the Falcons hit six against Northern Illinois in a 15-2 victory.
Sophomore Jamie Kertes (5-6) picked up the win after allowing just one earned run and striking out five in the first 5.0 innings of play. Freshman Braiden Dillow also saw action, striking out two while allowing two earned runs in the final 2.0 frames.
The Falcons started the game on fire, belting three solo home runs in the top of the first inning. Fulk hit her third of the season in the first at bat of the contest, followed by a homer to center field from Berger for the 2-0 lead. Dick capped the inning with her first home run of the season, sending a shot to center field to build on the Falcon advantage.
Bowling Green continued to add to the lead in the top of the third, putting up three more runs on three Falcon hits. Berger started the frame with her record-breaking solo homer, before Dick followed with two-run shot for her second home run of the day.
While the Titans were able to cut into the Falcon lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth, Bowling Green answered right back with three-runs in the top of the sixth. A double with two runners on from Yoho brought home the first Falcon run of the frame, while an RBI groundout from Dick in the following at bat brought home the second. An error allowed the third Falcon to cross home in the inning, pushing Bowling Green's lead to 9-1.
The Falcons continued to pour on the offense in the final frame, adding three final runs on two hits to push the Bowling Green run total to 12. The Titans would add two runs over the final two innings, but Bowling Green's bats proved to be too powerful, giving the Falcons a 12-3 win in game one.
Berger once again had a strong performance in game two, hitting her third home run of the day in a 2-for-3 performance. Sophomore Emily McClelland went 2-for-3 in the contest, hitting her first career home run in the victory. In total the Falcons collected seven extra-base hits, including doubles from Fulk, Dick and freshman Marisa Shook. Junior Erika Stratton recorded a double and a triple, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Paris Imholz (10-4) earned the complete game victory, giving up just one earned run and striking out four.
The Falcons scored in six of the seven innings in game two, doing the most damage in the top of the second with a four-run frame. Stratton started the inning with a triple to right field, eventually coming home in the next at bat thanks to a fielding error. With two outs and two runners on, Berger belted her first home run of game and third of the afternoon to give the Falcons a 5-0 lead.
The Titans would add a run in the bottom of the fifth, but consecutive Falcon runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh inning added up to a 9-1 game-two Bowling Green victory.
The Falcons are back in action on Friday, April 5 in a doubleheader against Akron at Meserve Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
