The Bowling Green State University football team has announced that eight players will serve as team captains for the 2013 season. Alex Bayer (TE), Jairus Campbell (DT), Dominic Flewellyn (OL), BooBoo Gates (S), Ronnie Goble (DE), Chief Kekuewa (OL), Gabe Martin (LB) and Paul Swan (LB) were voted team captains by their teammates on Thursday morning.
This captain class consists of seven seniors and one junior and has combined for 146 career starts. Five of the eight captains play on the defensive side of the ball, while four of the eight earned All-MAC honors in 2012.
Bayer, a third-team All-MAC member last season, has started 25 straight games in his Falcon career. Last season he recorded 36 receptions for 410 yards and three touchdowns, earning a spot on the John Mackey Mid-Season Watch List, given to the nation's top tight end.
Campbell spent most of last season recovering from a foot injury, but is expected to be ready to go when 2013 begins. The fifth-year senior to be played in three games last season (all starts), finishing with four tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sack.
Flewellyn is one of three returning captains, having served during the 2012 campaign. Flewellyn earned third-team All-MAC last season, starting all 13 games at guard. The senior to be has started 33 straight games for the Falcons, including eight as a true freshman.
Gates, a first-team All-MAC honoree in 2012, started 12 games, finishing the year with 47 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and two interceptions. It was his first year starting at the safety position, serving as the team's rover in 2010 and 2011. Gates has started 25 contests in his career.
Goble, like Flewellyn, returns for his second stint as a captain of the Orange and Brown. Goble played in 12 games last season, recording 12 tackles and one tackle for loss.
Despite being a member of the team for just over one year (arrived on campus in Jan., 2012), Kekuewa was one of eight Falcons honored as team captains for 2013. “Chief” started all 13 games last season at center, helping the Falcons average 153.4 yards per game on the ground and was part of an offensive line that allowed just 15 sacks in 13 contests.
The lone junior on this list, Martin, exploded onto the scene last season, earning first-team All-MAC honors in his first year as a starter for BGSU. Martin led the team with 70 tackles, while adding 8.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one interception. Martin served as BGSU's rover on a defense that ranked in the top-10 nationally in nearly every statistical category in 2012.
Swan will be the third two-time captain when BGSU opens the season versus Tulsa on Aug. 29. The linebacker started all 13 games in 2012, finishing the season with 65 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and one sack. The senior to be has started 24 games in his BGSU career.
