Falcons Fall At Nationally-Ranked FGCU
March 06, 2013 | Baseball
Blaylock's strong start spoiled by four errors
Box Score (FGCU 7 - BGSU 0)
FORT MYERS, Fla.—Trevor Blaylock allowed just one earned run in 5.2 innings on Wednesday night at 23-ranked Florida Gulf Coast University, but it wasn't enough as the Bowling Green State University baseball team fell by a score of 7-0. Blaylock kept FGCU hitters off balance all night, striking out six and inducing three double plays.
The Falcon offense couldn't string any rallies together on Wednesday night in support of Blaylock, as just six batters reached base for the Orange and Brown. Three times the Falcons put runners into scoring position, but they couldn't come through with the key hit to crack the scoreboard against FGCU starter Clint Knoblauch, Knoblauch went five innings for the win, allowing just three hits.
Facing the 10th-best pitching staff in the nation, the Falcons had little room for error on the defensive side if they hoped to stick around and win it at the end. However, the Falcons would commit four errors, which led to five unearned runs on the night. The Falcons have now committed 27 errors on the season through nine games.
In the bottom of the first, the first three FGCU batters reached base with singles before Blaylock would induce a double play and get a strike out to escape the inning trailing just 1-0.
Blaylock would get the Eagles to roll into a double play in each of the first three innings Wednesday night, turning in his best start of the season to date.
Following the twin-killer in the third, the Eagles would score two runs on a throwing error by the Falcons. On that play, Jesse Rait—backing up the play down the right field line—would throw out the batter trying to extend it into a three-base error, but it wouldn't be before two runners had crossed home.
Rait was the only Falcon to reach base twice on Wednesday night, turning in a solid performance from right field.
A trio of Blaylock, Ben Singer, and Nick Bruns would keep the Eagles off the scoreboard until the bottom of the eighth when the Eagles would add four runs (three unearned) to increase the lead to 7-0. Levi Fisher also made an appearance in the bottom of the eighth for the Orange and Brown.
With the loss, the Falcons drop to 2-7 on the season, having lost seven consecutive contests. FGCU improves to 10-3 on the season with the win.
The Falcons will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for a twinbill, squaring off with Georgetown (2 p.m.) and West Virginia (6 p.m.). Cody Apthorpe will start the first game for the Falcons, with game two's starter yet to be decided.
