BGSU Men's Basketball Signs Bernard Edwards, Jr.
November 18, 2013 | Men's Basketball
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University men's basketball head coach Louis Orr has announced the signing of Bernard Edwards, Jr. (Lehigh Acres, Fla./Lehigh High School) to a National Letter of Intent to continue both his academic and athletic career at BGSU.
"We are extremely pleased and excited to have Bernard and his family join our Falcon Family. BJ is not only a talented and athletic point guard, but also a high character individual that will fit in well with our guys both on and off the court. He brings quickness, playmaking, scoring and defense to our team. He will give us a penetrating guard that can put pressure on the opposition on both ends of the floor," stated Coach Orr. "He has very good pace to his game and can finish in the lane with both hands, as well as having the ability to shoot the three. He is a team player, and comes from a Lehigh High School program that is led by an outstanding coach in Dawn McNew. BJ is truly blessed to have a lot of love and support from great parents, Bernard Sr. and Lashonda Edwards. We gladly welcome them to our family and appreciate their trust and support."
Last season as a junior, Edwards led Lehigh H.S. to an 18-7 overall record, as he averaged 18.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 3.4 steals per contest.
The 6-0, 160 pounds point guard shot over 53 percent from the field last season overall, including knocking down 32 percent of his three-point attempts over the 25 game season.
The All-SW Florida Second-Team point guard and All-Freshman Team honoree, averaged 21.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.1 steals per game as a sophomore and has continued to improve on his all around game each year.
Edwards Jr., whose father Bernard Edwards played football at Ohio State from 1988-1991 and also in the Arena Football League for eight seasons, has averaged 16.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game over his last three years on the varsity squad for the Lightning.
The senior, who was named to the Maxpreps.com Basketball Recruiting: Class of 2014 Watch List, is on the verge of scoring 1,000 career points and could leave Lehigh High as its all-time leading scorer if he eclipses the 1,700 mark.
Edwards Jr., who chose Bowling Green over Northwestern State, Austin Peay, and Ball State, will join a Falcons' squad that is in its seventh season under Coach Orr and has gone 24-10 over the last two-plus years at home in the Stroh Center.
