MAC Releases Preseason Poll
October 29, 2013 | Men's Basketball
Cleveland, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team has been selected to finish sixth in the Mid-American Conference East Division in the MAC Men's Basketball Preseason Poll, as voted on by a 25-member MAC News Media Panel.
Bowling Green earned 35 total points to rank just behind Miami (Ohio) at 42 points. Akron earned 18 first-place votes and was picked first in the East with 143 points, followed by Buffalo (six first-place votes and 120 points), Ohio (94 points) and Buffalo (one first-place vote and 91 points). In the West Division, Toledo earned the pre-season nod as the favorite, followed by Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Ball State, Central Michigan and Northern Illinois.
"We have a great group of guys," seventh-year Head Coach Louis Orr said. "They've worked extremely hard, they are hungry and close-knit. This is an opportunity for guys to assume new roles and surprise some people. We will do it collectively."
The conference also announced its preseason All-MAC teams. The Falcons did not garner any recognition after graduating its top two scorers from a year ago. However, Bowling Green does return two starters and sixth-man Richaun Holmes (6.5 points, 5.0 rebounds in 2012-13), who broke BGSU's single-season blocked shot record a year ago. Those returning starters include Chauncey Orr (7.5 points, 3.7 rebounds) and Cam Black (3.4 points, 4.3 rebounds)
Bowling Green hosts an exhibition game against Malone Saturday at 2 pm in the Stroh Center before kicking off the regular season a week later by hosting Earlham at 2 pm on Nov. 9. The Falcons will then welcome South Florida to the Stroh Center Nov. 15 at 8:30 pm as the second game of a doubleheader with the women's basketball team. That contest will be aired as an ESPN3 exclusive broadcast.
