Clawson Receives Contract Extension Through 2018 Season

“I appreciate the confidence shown in me and our football staff by president Dr. Mary Ellen Mazey and our athletics director, Greg Christopher,” said Clawson. “Both Dr. Mazey and Greg have been extremely supportive in my time here and they have made it clear the University has made a commitment to the future of BGSU football. We have built a solid foundation over the past four years, and I look forward to continuing to build and grow our program.”
In Clawson's four years at the helm of the football program he has helped BGSU advance to a pair of bowl games, including the 2009 Humanitarian Bowl and the 2012 Military Bowl. During that time span he has compiled a 22-28 overall record and is 16-16 in Mid-American Conference play.
Clawson, known as a program builder, helped turn the Falcons into a MAC contender in a short span, finishing 2-10 in 2010 to 8-5 in 2012. Prior to BGSU, his two head coaching jobs resurrected first Fordham, boosting a Rams program coming off 12 straight losing seasons into NCAA playoff participants, and then Richmond, which twice advanced to the postseason.
“Dave has done a terrific job of rebuilding our football program,” said Christopher. “We now have a solid foundation for continued success. Dave has not only instilled a winning culture, but he runs a first-rate program that represents the entire University in a positive fashion. This extension is about our commitment to Dave, the coaching staff and the entire football program.”

This past season Clawson produced 10 All-MAC players, the most for a Falcon football team since 2004, six of which were on the defensive side of the ball. That defense ranked sixth in the country in total yards (296.6) and 10th in scoring (16.7). Leading the defense was Chris Jones, a first-team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). Jones finished 2012 tied for seventh in the nation in sacks (12.5) and 11th in tackles for loss (19.0).
Clawson twice has been named national Division I-AA Coach of the Year, winning once at Fordham and once at Richmond, and was named his league's coach of the year four times in a seven-year span. In 2005 and 2007, the Richmond Touchdown Club selected him College Coach of the Year, and he was an Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award Finalist in 2002 and 2005.
