BGSU Announces 2012-13 Men’s Basketball Schedule

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team has announced its 2012-13 schedule, which includes a 16-game Mid-American Conference slate and 15 non-conference games.
In non-conference play, Bowling Green will compete in four games in the Preseason NIT. The Falcons will compete in a four-team tournament at Michigan Nov. 12-14 and the winner will advance to Madison Square Garden for the semifinals and finals Nov. 21-23. Those not advancing will compete in two more games in the Preseason NIT Nov. 19-20 against opponents and at a location yet to be determined.
Bowling Green will play seven non-conference home games, most notably against Michigan State Dec. 18. The Falcons will also host Lake Erie in the season-opener Nov. 9, Detroit Nov. 27, Youngstown State Dec. 1, Wright State Dec. 3, Samford Dec. 8 and New Orleans Feb. 21 in a rare non-BracketBusters second semester non-conference game. That contest comes just two days prior to a road ESPN BracketBusters contest. BGSU will also host an exhibition game against Central State Nov. 4.
Outside of the Preseason NIT and the BracketBusters game, the Falcons will also play road non-conference games at South Florida Dec. 21, at North Dakota Dec. 28, and at Temple Dec. 31.
Of the nine NCAA Division I non-conference opponents on the schedule (that are currently known), seven finished above .500 a year ago. Five of those teams advanced to postseason play and four competed in the NCAA Tournament (Detroit, Michigan State, South Florida and Temple). South Florida advanced to the NCAA Tournament Third Round and Michigan State went to the NCAA Tournament Regional Semifinals.
“We are excited, motivated and working hard in preparation to achieve our goals for the upcoming season,” BGSU head coach Louis Orr said. “We know the battles and opportunities that lie ahead. Playing in the Preseason NIT gives us an early opportunity to win a championship, challenge and establish ourselves against excellent competition, and grow as a team. We want to build on our NIT opportunity and the rest of our strong non-conference schedule, which will include at least four NCAA tournament participants, to ready ourselves for an always competitive MAC season.”
In conference play, the MAC has changed the scheduling format. In the past, Bowling Green would play five games against East Division schools, six against the West, and then return to the East for the final five games. Now, the first 11 conference games will be a mixture of East and West teams before returning to divisional play for the final five games.
“With the new league format, playing both East and West division foes through the first 11 games, the diversity in conference play will give it a different feel and flow,” Orr said. “That is something we must prepare for.”
With that being the case, BGSU will open MAC play at Central Michigan Jan. 9 before hosting Eastern Michigan Jan. 12. After playing at Miami and Buffalo, the Falcons will return home to face Kent State Jan. 23 before the Battle For I-75 at Toledo Jan. 26. Bowling Green closes the month with a home game against Akron Jan. 30.
The Falcons open February at home against Ball State Feb. 2 and head on the road for games at Northern Illinois and Ohio. The Falcons close out West play with a home game against Western Michigan Feb. 13. Bowling Green will be at Akron Jan. 16 before the two non-conference contests. The Falcons end February at home against Miami Feb. 27.
BGSU plays three regular season games in March, hosting Ohio March 2 and playing at Kent State March 5. For the third consecutive year, Bowling Green will close the season against Buffalo, playing the Bulls in the Stroh Center either March 8 or 9.
“Our non-conference home schedule should give our fans plenty of excitement and value, along with a competitive road schedule that will help prepare us for the always tough MAC road games,” Orr said. “Every game, we must be prepared to compete at a high level. That's what we want.”
BGSU men's basketball went 16-16 a year ago and finished with a record of 9-7 in MAC play, good for sixth place in the conference. The Falcons advanced to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT), marking the program's second postseason appearance in the past four years. Bowling Green returns three starters and nine letter winners from 2011-12.
