Story No. 3 From 2011-12: Stroh Center Hosts NCAA Tournament, Baylor
July 18, 2012 | General
Throughout the summer, the Bowling Green Athletics Department will be counting down the top 10 stories of the 2011-12 school year, as voted on by members of the Athletics Department administration and the Athletics Communications Department. We will release the list one at a time throughout the summer, until the No. 1 moment of 2011-12 is revealed on Wednesday, Aug. 1 -- the day before BGSU football camp opens.
On Oct. 26, 2010, the BGSU Athletics Department announced that the University would host first and second rounds of the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament in the Stroh Center, an arena which had not even been completed at that point. From that point on, the Athletics Department, the University, and the community went to work to make sure the event would be special.
Almost 18 months later, on Selection Monday (March 12, 2012), the town of Bowling Green learned which four teams would compete in the Stroh Center. Along with Ohio State, Florida, and UC Santa Barbara, the undefeated and top-ranked Baylor Bears were selected. Baylor, a team which went on to win the national championship and become the first collegiate basketball team to go 40-0, featured the dominant Brittney Griner. And the on-court highlight of the weekend came when Griner dunked in traffic against Florida in the second round.
The Stroh Center sold out for all three games of the tournament and the Bowling Green community received rave reviews for the way the event was held and the atmosphere in the arena. With six hours of national television opportunity on the ESPN family of networks, the event brought a tremendous spotlight to Northwest Ohio.
