Charlie Share NBA career on basketball reference
Bowling Green, Ohio – One of the all-time great Bowling Green State University basketball players, Charlie Share, passed away Thursday (June 7, 2012). A 1964 inductee into the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame, Share was picked No. 1 overall by the Boston Celtics in the 1950 NBA Draft.
At 6-foot-11, Share's name continues to litter the BGSU record book, even more than 60 years after he put on the Bowling Green uniform for the final time. He is the sixth all-time leading scorer for the Falcons with 1,730 career points, averaging 14.3 points over his 121-game career. He holds the school record with 711 free-throw attempts during his career and was a third team All-American in 1950.
Playing for legendary coach Harold Anderson, Share led the Falcons to a third place finish in the 1949 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) as a junior. Bowling Green was ranked as high as No. 10 in the country in the Associated Press poll that year. As a senior, Share scored a career-high 39 points in a win over Loyola (Calif.) on Dec. 22, 1949 and averaged 19.8 points per game on the season. His teams went 98-31 in four years, including a remarkable 55-3 record at home.
Share went on to have a stellar nine-year NBA career, serving as a team captain and winning a world championship with the St. Louis Hawks in 1958. He played in 596 career NBA games, averaging 8.3 points per game, including a double-double averaged of 13.6 points and 10.8 rebounds during the 1955-56 season.
