February 23, 2012 | Ice Hockey
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University has announced that the public phase of the Bring Back the Glory fundraising campaign has begun, kicked off by a $100,000 pledge by an anonymous community member.
The Bring Back the Glory campaign began in October of 2009 as a way to upgrade the BGSU Ice Arena and support the Falcon hockey program at BGSU has generated more than $7.2 million towards the $9 million goal, which includes a combined $4 million investment from the University and the state. Falcon hockey was a dynasty in the 1970s and 1980s, culminating in the 1984 NCAA National Championship in Lake Placid. The Falcons outlasted the University of Minnesota-Duluth in the longest collegiate hockey championship game in history, winning 5-4 in four overtimes.
The most recent $100,000 gift to support hockey scholarships was given by a longtime community member and hockey season ticket holder who attended the NCAA Championship in Lake Placid in 1984 and wants to contribute to the future success of the program that will position Falcon hockey to contend for another national championship. This individual was the first to return a Bring Back the Glory pledge form, recently sent out to an audience of over 15,000 alumni, community members, former players, donors and friends who have demonstrated support for BGSU.
Of the $7.2 million raised so far, more than $1.6 million has been donated by the Bring Back the Glory steering committee. The volunteer members of that committee are honorary campaign chair Scott Hamilton, campaign chair Mike Pikul, Rob Blake, Tom Blakely, Alissa Czisny, Steve Green, Mike Marsh, Jack Vivian, and Van Wright.
