BGSU Tennis Team Earns NCAA Public Recognition Award Yet Again
November 22, 2012 | Women's Tennis
Falcons recognized for their APR score for eighth consecutive year
The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean earn this honor for the eighth consecutive season. The team has earned the award in every year since its inception. In fact, BGSU has had a perfect score of 1,000 in every year of the APR's existence.
"I am extremely proud of these young ladies," said Dean. "As a team, they have set high academic goals and held each other accountable. To achieve this high standard as a team is an outstanding accomplishment for Bowling Green tennis."
The Public Recognition honor is bestowed upon teams with an NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.
"I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate your institution's recipients of the NCAA Public Recognition Award," NCAA President Mark Emmert wrote in a letter to all teams earning awards. "Thank you for your leadership and support of the academic reform efforts. These teams represent intercollegiate athletics at its best."
Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). The announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.
On the court, the 2011-12 Falcons finished with an overall record of 10-10. BGSU went 4-4 in Mid-American Conference regular-season play, earning the fifth seed for the MAC Championships, and the Falcons advanced to the semifinals of the league tournament for the second consecutive season.
The 2012-13 Falcons played in four tournaments in the fall, and the season resumes on Jan. 11, 2013, when BGSU participates in the adidas IU Winter Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
