Baseball Adds Five For 2013-14
November 27, 2012 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University baseball team has announced the addition of five student-athletes to the program for the 2013-14 academic year. The Falcons, of head coach Danny Schmitz (23rd season), will be looking to add depth and competition to every position with this class.
Tyler Anderson, Greg Basalyga, Johnny Crawford, Devon Fisk, and Addison Rospert are the five student-athletes who have committed to the Orange and Brown for the 2014 season. All five commitments hail from Ohio.
"We feel that our 2013 class is a very solid one, as we were looking to fill needs on the mound, infield and outfield," Schmitz said. "Tyler Anderson and Johnny Crawford give us arms from both sides of the rubber. They are both the aces of their staffs, and we expect them to come in and compete for a spot in the rotation next year. Johnny can also be used as a dual guy in the outfield and first base. Greg Basalyga will come in and provide us with a middle of the lineup hitter right away. His high school teammate, Devon Fisk gives us a left-handed hitting outfielder. Finally, Addison Rospert will be a very good leadoff hitter."
Tyler Anderson | RHP | 6-2 165 | Lima, Ohio | Lima Shawnee High School
Anderson, a two-sport letter winner at Lima Shawnee High School, had a successful junior season. After his high school season was cut short due to injury, he bounced back during the summer to post a 7-3 record with a 2.75 ERA. He also struck out 62 batters. Anderson is ranked in the top 100 players for the state of Ohio. He has also lettered the past two season in soccer.
Coaching Staff Comments: Tyler should be able to come in right away and bolster our bullpen. He worked hard to come back from a dislocated shoulder last spring, putting together a great summer. He has three pitches that he has a feel for right now. He is a student of the game and is able to make adjustments to his game very quickly to get the results that he wants.
Greg Basalyga | 3B/RHP | 5-11 215 | Pickerington, Ohio | Pickerington Central High School
Basalyga is ranked the top third baseman in the state of Ohio by PBR. A three-year letter winner at Pickerington Central, Basalyga was named all-OCC and all-district last season. He also lettered four years in football and was first team all-OCC this season. Last season, Baslayga hit .347 with a team-high three home runs. On the mound, he posted a 1.96 ERA, with a 3-1 record on the year. He also added two saves.
Coaching Staff Comments: Greg, in our minds, is one of the top bats in the 2013 class. His ability to square the ball up every at bat is exciting. His tough, blue-collar attitude that he has on the football field translates to the ball diamond as a true leader. Defensively, he makes all of the plays at third base. Greg will also be a great addition to our pitching staff. He has a great feel for three pitches and throws strikes with all of them.
Johnny Crawford | LHP/OF | 6-2 180 | Wapakoneta, Ohio | Wapakoneta High School
Crawford will come to Bowling Green as one of the best left-handed pitchers in his class for the state of Ohio. As a three-year letter winner in both baseball and football, Crawford represented Ohio in the Heartland Classic in Norman, Okla. this past summer. As a junior, he was named first team all-WBL, all-Northwest district, and all-Ohio. Crawford and Wapakoneta were the state runner-ups in Ohio. As a senior, Crawford was a captain of the football team, while leading the WBL in interceptions.
Coaching Staff Comments: Johnny should be able to come in right away and help us out on weekends on the mound. He has great mound presence and a strong will to win. He is able to throw all of his pitches for strikes and has an idea of what he wants to do right now as a high school pitcher. With his athleticism he makes himself a dual guy being able to play the outfield and first base.
Devon Fisk | OF | 6-1 180 | Pickerington, Ohio | Pickerington Central High School
Fisk, a high school teammate of Greg Basalyga, will bring an added dimension of speed to the Falcon outfield in 2014. Fisk played for American Legion Post 283 this past summer, as well. Off the field, Devon is also involved in a leadership group called Sunny Side Up at his high school. Fisk will challenge defenses in the MAC with his speed out of the left-handed batter's box. Fisk batted .343 as a junior, while stealing a team-high six bases. During the summer, Fisk batted .337 with 21 stolen bases.
Coaching Staff Comments: Devon is a very athletic outfielder who shows tremendous upside. He has a nice gap-to-gap approach from the left side of the plate. In the outfield he possesses an above average arm. We feel that Devon will be able to come in and help us out right away.
Addison Rospert | SS/OF | Port Clinton, Ohio | Port Clinton High School
When it is all said and done at Port Clinton High School, Addison Rospert will have earned eight letters, split between football and baseball. Rospert was named first team all-SBC and all-district last season. He was also a first team all-SBC selection for football this fall. Crossroads America Baseball recently named Rospert one of the top 20 players in the state of Ohio for 2013. In the classroom, Rospert excels as well, as he is an honor roll student.
Coaching Staff Comments: Addison has a ton of athletic ability. We feel that he will be able to help us out both in the infield and outfield. His foot speed is one of the best in the 2013 class for the state of Ohio. He has a 90+ arm from the outfield. He is a hard-nosed, blue-collar type player that doesn't like to lose.
"We feel that all five of these guys will come in and fit in with the Falcon baseball family right away because they all come from winning high school programs and are outstanding student-athletes."
The 2013 Falcons will begin the season on February 15, in Bowling Green, Ky. when they square off with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.
