BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 regulation tie with Ohio State Saturday night, eventually defeating the Buckeyes in a CCHA shootout. Freshman Ted Pletsch and junior Marc Rodriquez lit-the-lamp for the Falcons, while junior goaltender Andrew Hammond stopped 18-of-20 shots in the contest.
The Falcons came out on fire in the opening frame, catering to the 3,228 fans in attendance. Bowling Green outshot the Buckeyes 12-6 in the first period, spending a majority of play in the Ohio State zone.
The Falcons broke through Ohio State goaltender Cal Heeter early in the period, netting a goal just 2:29 into the game. Freshman Marcus Perrier threw a shot on net that deflected in the slot, and landed on Pletsch's stick in front. Pletsch netted his third goal of the year, and gave the Falcons the early 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Bowling Green continued to pressure the Buckeyes early in the second stanza, despite beginning the period short handed. After an end around dump by Ohio State, the puck eventually made its way to the stick of Rodriguez, who carried the puck all the way through the neutral zone. The Illinois native walked in on a 2-on-1 break, and wristed his first goal of the season past Heeter to give the Falcons the 2-0 lead.
Hammond stood strong for the Falcons through the remainder of the second period, giving Bowling Green the 2-0 advantage heading into the final frame.
Despite outshooting the Buckeyes 13-8 in the third period, Ohio State managed to claw back, scoring two goals in the final four minutes to tie the contest 2-2.
Buckeye freshman Al Mclean netted his first of the season at the 16:12 mark of the third, while fellow freshman Max McCormick netted his third of the year on the power play with just 2:25 remaining in the game.
Neither team could light the lamp in overtime, so the game was pushed to a CCHA shootout.
Sophomore Alex Szczechura scored in the first attempt for Ohio State, but was followed with a Falcon goal from sophomore Bryce Williamson to even the shootout 1-1.
Neither team scored in the second wave, leaving a final shooter for both schools.
Hammond stoned Buckeye Tanner Fritz, leaving the game in Falcon freshman Ryan Carpenter's hands. The Florida native skated in and beat Heeter low right side to win the shootout for Bowling Green, and give the Falcons a valuable extra point in CCHA play.
Rodriguez's goal marks his first point since Jan. 8 of last year, when he registered an assist in a 3-1 loss to Ferris State.
The regulation tie marks Bowling Green's first tie of the year when carrying a lead into the final period. The Falcons were previously 6-1-0, suffering their only loss (3-2) at the hands of Notre Dame on Oct. 29, 2011.
The CCHA shootout win puts the Falcons' overall record at 6-13-4, with a record of 1-11-3-2 in CCHA action. The CCHA shootout loss puts the Buckeyes' record at 14-4-2 overall, with a record of 10-3-2-1 in conference play.
The Falcons hit the ice again tomorrow for an encore game against Ohio State. The puck drops at 5:05 p.m.
