BGSU junior earns her first career conference weekly honor
Bowling Green State University women's basketball standout Chrissy Steffen has been named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday (Jan. 2). Steffen, a junior, earns the honor for the first time in her collegiate career.
Steffen, a native of Carmel, Ind. (Carmel H.S.), earned the honor after leading the Falcons to a pair of road wins over Mountain West Conference teams. BGSU defeated Wyoming, 60-53, on Thursday night (Dec. 29), then topped Colorado State by a 70-57 count on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 31).
In the two wins, Steffen averaged 20.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists. She shot 45.2 percent from the field and 35.0% from three-point range, and added 1.5 steals per game on the week.
Steffen had 15 points in the Wyoming game, hitting a game-high three triples vs. the Cowgirls while adding four rebounds and three assists. At Colorado State, Steffen almost singlehandedly lifted the Falcons out of an early-game offensive slump, and finished with a career-high 25 points vs. the Rams.
Her well-rounded stat line at CSU also included seven boards, four assists and three steals. Steffen scored 16 first-half points in a nine-minute stretch. She had her own personal 8-0 run, which came in a 92-second span midway through the period and gave the Falcons the lead for good.
Steffen played the first 38 minutes of the CSU game, and the Falcons had a game-high 19-point lead when she headed to the bench. The Rams scored the game's final six points in those last two minutes.
On the week, Steffen led the Falcons in scoring and tied for the team lead in steals, while ranking second in assists and third in rebounding in the two games.
This season, the junior has 14.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, leading the Brown and Orange in the former category and tying for third in the latter. She also paces the Falcons in three-pointers made (22, 1.7 per game), free throws made (42) and attempted (58) and assists (2.3 apg), and is tied for the team lead in steals (2.1 spg).
Steffen earned this week's MAC Player-of-the-Week honor for the East Division. Yolanda Richardson of Toledo was named the MAC P-O-W in the West.
Earlier on Monday, Steffen earned a pair of honors from College Sports Madness. She was named the web site's conference player of the week, and Steffen also was named the National High-Major Player of the Week.
The Falcons of head coach Curt Miller, 10-3 overall, open MAC play Wednesday (Jan. 4), starting a three-game homestand by facing Kent State University. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center.
