Flashes Jump Out Early and Shut Out Falcons
May 14, 2011 | Baseball
Kent State hurler Kyle Hallock limited BGSU to just five hits and struck out ten in the 8-0 Falcon defeat.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Weather threatened the status of today's game two action between the Falcons and Golden Flashes but the bigger threat came in the form of the Kent State bats. The visitors from northeast Ohio tagged BGSU with six runs in the first three innings of Saturday's game and stayed ahead throughout in an 8-0 blanking of Bowling Green.

Nick Bruns (St. Henry, Ohio) took the ball for the Falcons but struggled early against the Kent State lineup. He lasted just 2.2 innings and allowed six runs, three in both the first and third innings. The Flashes mounted a two-out rally in the first hitting five consecutive singles between the four through seven batters. David Lyon, T.J. Sutton and George Roberts all had run scoring singles in the opening rack giving KSU a 3-0 lead after one.
In the third Kent State put together a second five-hit inning, again all singles. After Bruns (3-4) allowed his tenth hit of the game, the Falcons dipped into the bullpen and brought junior Ross Gerdeman (Fort Jennings, Ohio) in to close out the inning. He allowed a single to Jimmy Rider scoring the Golden Flashes' third run before striking out KSU slugger Travis Shaw to end the frame.
Gerdeman put together a remarkable relief outing keeping the Flashes scoreless through 5.1 innings of work. He did not allow a hit in the sixth or seventh innings and of the five hits he did allow, only one was for extra bases. He took the Falcons into the ninth inning without allowing the game to get further out of reach but the BGSU offense was held to just five hits by KSU starter Kyle Hallock. His six-strikeout performance ties a personal best previously set twice against non-conference opponents Kentucky (2/26/10) and Michigan (3/31/09). The length on his stay on the mound also tied a previous high set against Toledo earlier this season on April 17.
Hallock went 8.1 innings and allowed only six Falcon base runners on five hits and a walk, striking out a career-high ten men. Jon Berti (Troy, Mich.) notched the first Falcon hit in the fourth inning but it was one of only five singles the hosts mustered against the left-hander.
In the ninth, Kent State added two more runs credited to freshman Levi Fisher (Bryan, Ohio) who allowed the runners on base before Evan Campbell recorded his fifth hit of the day, a two-RBI single off of Dan Parsons (Strongsville, Ohio). Parsons struck out Rider to end the top of the ninth. He has now struck out at least one hitter in each of his five appearances this season.
Bowling Green (18-28, 10-13) and Kent State (36-13, 19-4) finish the series at Warren Steller Field on Sunday. First pitch time is set for 1 p.m., weather permitting. Five BGSU seniors will be honored and recognized prior to the start of the game for their contributions to Falcon baseball with an approximate start time of 12:45 p.m. for Senior Day festivities.
