Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University men's basketball coach Louis Orr remembers losing on Senior Night in the final game at Manley Field House at Syracuse in 1980. He didn't want his team to have that same feeling 31 years later.
Sure enough, Bowling Green smothered Buffalo's perimeter shooters, outrebounded the Mid-American Conference's best rebounding team, and shot 47 percent from the field on the way to a 73-63 win over the Bulls in the final regular season men's basketball game ever in Anderson Arena. The victory earns the Falcons the No. 7 seed and a home game in the opening round of the MAC Tournament Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
Buffalo came into the game shooting 39 percent from three-point range and junior guard Zach Filzen averages 3.6 three-pointers per game, second-most in the country. But Bowling Green held the Bulls to 3-for-15 shooting from long range and Filzen was just 1-for-4 before going to the bench for the final 18 minutes of play.
On the boards, Buffalo entered the game leading the MAC by outrebounding opponents by 4.1 per game. But Bowling Green held a 25-14 rebounding edge in the first half and ended with a 39-32 lead on the glass. Many of those came from A'uston Calhoun, who finished with a career-high 14 rebounds.
Calhoun, for his part, added 16 points and three assists to post his third career double-double. Dee Brown had a game-high 21 points, making all eight of his free-throw attempts, as Bowling Green jumped out to a 13-point halftime lead and never looked back.
Buffalo led 9-4 early but Jordon Crawford knocked down a three-pointer and the Falcons took a 17-16 lead with 7:47 to play. A Joe Jakubowski three-ball followed by a jumper sparked Bowling Green to a 20-8 run the rest of the half. Calhoun closed the half with a thunderous dunk that gave the Falcons a 37-24 lead.
Bowling Green pushed the lead to as many as 17 in the second half on a Calhoun free-throw with 6:36 left and then again on a Scott Thomas lay-up with 5:57 to play. Buffalo used full-court pressure to force some sloppy play late and got as close as seven with 2:49 left but the Falcons made 7-of-8 free-throws the rest of the way for the win.
Along with 21 points from Brown and 16 from Calhoun, Crawford finished with 13 points, three rebounds and two steals. Thomas has nine points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Jakubowski came off the bench for seven points.
Buffalo falls to 17-12 overall and 8-8 in MAC play with the loss. Bowling Green closes the regular season with a record of 13-18 overall and also 8-8 in league action. As the No. 7 seed, the Falcons will host No. 10 seed Northern Illinois Tuesday night at 7 p.m. for the right to advance to Cleveland for the MAC Quarterfinals. Bowling Green won the only meeting of the year between the two programs by a 73-70 score in overtime in DeKalb, Ill.
