September 29, 2010 | Softball
Starkville, Miss. – The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced today that the Bowling Green State University softball team had the second-highest grade point average in NCAA Division I for the 2010 season. As well, 15 players were recognized as a girls got game/NFCA Scholar Athlete for having a 3.50 GPA.
“The ladies we've brought in really understand the concept of student-athlete,” softball coach Shannon Salsburg said. “This shows the hard work they have put in off the field. My assistants deserve so much credit for working with our younger players and helping them get started on the right track academically.”
Bowling Green's 3.571 team GPA trailed only Robert Morris (3.580 GPA) and was just ahead of South Carolina Upstate (3.566 GPA). Central Michigan was the only other Mid-American Conference school ranked in the top 10 in ninth place.
Bowling Green's 15 individual honorees were also the second-most in the country in NCAA Division I. Only South Carolina Upstate had more with 16. The BGSU scholar athletes were Andrea Arney, Carly Riepenhoff, Courtney Cox, Haleigh Bielstein, Hannah Fulk, Jessica Odell, Karmen Coffey, Lindsay Arney, Melissa Bott, Melissa Bowman, Melissa West, Paige Berger, Rachel Proehl, Susan Sontag, and Zada Lines.
“Shannon, the coaching staff, and the student-athletes deserve a lot of credit,” BGSU Director of Athletics Greg Christopher said. “The players have dedicated themselves to academic excellence and our coaches clearly have classroom success as a priority. We are proud of the work they are doing.”
