BGSU Women Win Faculty Athletic Representatives Award
August 19, 2010 | General
Bowling Green, Ohio – On the heels of winning the 2009-10 Mid-American Conference Institutional Academic Achievement Award earlier this week, the MAC announced that Bowling Green's women have been named the winners of the 2009-10 Mid-American Conference Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) Academic Achievement Award for the second consecutive year. The award is designed to recognize the conference institution with the overall highest grade point average rank by gender.
Bowling Green had the highest GPA rank average in the MAC with a score of 8.45 and the Falcons carried the highest league GPA in four MAC-sponsored sports (basketball, cross country, softball and tennis) in 2009-10.
“We are thrilled to receive the MAC's FAR Award for our women student-athletes,” Director of Athletics Greg Christopher said. “Repeating as winners of the FAR Award, as well as this week's GPA honor, are testaments to our top-notch student-athletes and the coaches and staff who support them.”
Overall, BGSU's student-athletes set a new record with a cumulative 3.07 grade point average through the end of the 2009-10 school year and 22 student-athletes maintain a 4.0 cumulative GPA. On the women's side, the tennis team received APR Public Recognition for being ranked among the top 10 percent of all tennis programs in the country, while the women's basketball team was named to the WBCA Academic Honor Roll for the sixth-best team GPA in the country. The volleyball team earned the AVCA Academic Team award for the 10th consecutive year and the track and field program won the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award.
Using the same ranking method as the MAC's Reese and Jacoby trophies (awarded to the best overall male and female athletic programs in the league), the FAR awards are given to the institution's male and female program with the highest overall GPA rank points within the conference. The award began in 2007-08 and BGSU has won the award two of the three years.
