Women's Basketball Falcons Land Duke Transfer

West Chester, Ohio, native Alexis Rogers will join program, sit out 2010-11 season
Bowling Green State University women's basketball coach Curt Miller has announced the addition of Alexis Rogers to the program. Rogers, a transfer from Duke University, will sit out the 2010-11 season per NCAA regulations, and will retain three seasons of eligibility.
“Alexis will be a great addition to our BGSU family,” said Miller. “After learning of her desire to move back closer to home, I developed a connection with Alexis quickly and felt our program would be an outstanding fit for her.
“I am excited to work with Alexis, as she is a talented and versatile player capable of playing as many as three positions for the Falcons.”'
Rogers, a 6-1 wing/forward, is a native of West Chester, Ohio. She played in 24 games off the bench as a freshman at Duke in 2009-10, helping the Blue Devils to a 30-6 overall record and a 12-2 Atlantic Coast Conference mark. Duke won the ACC championship and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Championships.
Rogers averaged 1.5 points and 1.6 rebounds per game, playing 5.2 minutes per contest for the Blue Devils. She had a pair of double-digit scoring games, with a career-high 14 points in her collegiate debut vs. Houston Baptist and an 11-point outing in just eight minutes of action vs. North Carolina Central. She had season-high totals of seven rebounds in the HBU game and four steals vs. N.C. Central.
Rogers, a graduate of Lakota West H.S., was the Greater Miami Conference Player of the Year as a senior in 2008-09. In just three years at the school, she finished second on the school career points (1,027) and rebounds (536). Rogers earned All-GMC First-Team honors in all three of her years at the school.
Rogers averaged 15.0 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 1.7 assists as a senior, being named to the all-city and All-Southwest District first teams for the second consecutive year. Under the direction of head coach Andy Fishman, the Firebirds had a record of 24-3, went a perfect 14-0 in the GMC for the second-straight year and advanced to the state semifinals.
As a junior, Rogers averaged 12.8 points, 5.9 boards, 2.3 assists and 1.8 steals as the Firebirds went 26-2 and lost at the buzzer in the state championship game. She had 10.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.3 assists in her sophomore campaign at Lakota West, after attending Holy Innocents H.S. in Georgia as a freshman.
In addition to ranking second in school history in both scoring and rebounding, Rogers is fourth all-time at Lakota West in both assists (169) and steals (178).
Rogers was ranked on numerous national recruiting lists as a senior. She was No. 24 in the country according to the Blue Star Report and was listed No. 57 by All-Star Girls Report and No. 82 by ESPN HoopGurlz. ESPN HoopGurlz ranked her 17th among wings in the Class of 2009.
“Coming out of high school, Alexis was considered a Top 100 prospect by every major scouting service in the country,” said Miller. “She will be a tough match-up for opponents in the future because of her strength and athleticism.”
Although Rogers will not be able to travel with the team or suit up for games in 2010-11, she is permitted to participate in practice with the Falcons.
“Alexis's role will be very important this season, providing tough competition to our players in her year of residency,” said Miller. “After the graduation of six seniors in the spring of 2011, Alexis will be asked to provide leadership and experience to a young team.”
Rogers is the daughter of Youlanda Rogers and Victor Merchant. Her brother, Antwaun Rogers, played college football at Purdue (2000-04) and had a stint with the NFL's Denver Broncos.
In 2010-11, Miller and his staff will welcome back 10 letterwinners from last year's Mid-American Conference championship team, plus a Division-I transfer who sat out the 2009-10 campaign. The '09-10 Falcons went 27-7 overall and 14-2 in MAC play, winning the league regular-season and tournament crowns and advancing to the NCAA Championships.
