BGSU Earns a Second-Straight Top-10 Ranking
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team – having won six consecutive Mid-American Conference championships – obviously had yet another successful season on the court in 2009-10. And, head coach Curt Miller's program had one of the most successful campaigns in school history in the classroom as well, having earned national top-10 recognition for the second consecutive year.
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) has announced its 2009-10 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, and BGSU is ranked sixth in the entire nation on the NCAA Division I list. The announcement marks the second-straight year that the Falcons are in the top 10. BG was ranked fifth on the 2008-09 list.
"I am so proud of my players," said Miller. "They take pride in not only excelling on the court, but also in the classroom. This honor is a true credit to their hard work, dedication and commitment to their fields of study.
"It is a tremendous accomplishment for our program, and fulfills a goal that we set each year to be among the Academic Top 25. This news is as exciting to the coaching staff as winning a MAC Championship, as we strive to be an elite program both on and off the court."
The WBCA awards recognized teams throughout the country that have the highest grade point averages (GPA) for the 2009-10 season based upon nominations submitted by WBCA-member coaches.
Miller's Falcons had a team GPA of 3.500 for the '09-10 campaign, up from 3.470 last season. BGSU is the only Mid-American Conference program on the list for the second consecutive year, and the Falcons are the only program from the state of Ohio in the Division-I Top 25, also for the second-straight season.
On the hardwood, BGSU won the outright MAC regular-season championship for a conference-record sixth consecutive season. The Falcons posted an overall record of 27-7 and a conference mark of 14-2 last season, and BG also won the MAC Tournament for the fourth time in six years, advancing to the NCAA Championships. It marked BGSU's sixth-straight season with a national postseason appearance.
The Falcons are one of five schools to make an appearance in the 2010 NCAA Championships and on the WBCA Top 25 Team Honor Roll. The other such schools are South Dakota State (2nd on the WBCA list), Northern Iowa (7th), DePaul (8th) and Hartford (23rd).
BGSU made the list for the third time in the last four seasons. In addition to each of the last two years, the Falcons also made the WBCA Top 25 Team Honor Roll in 2006-07 (23rd, 3.300 GPA).
