Thorburn returns to MAC at Ohio Univ., Achter tabbed at St. Bonaventure
A pair of Bowling Green State University women's basketball alumnae have joined the NCAA Division-I coaching ranks. Megan Thorburn and Kate Achter have been hired at Ohio and Saint Bonaventure, respectively.
Thorburn's hiring was announced by Ohio head coach Semeka Randall last week (June 18). She joins the Bobcat staff after two years at Grand Valley State University.
"We are thrilled to have Megan join the Bobcat family," Randall said. "She comes from a great winning background, having played for a good coach, and knows what it takes to succeed as a college basketball player. She is a very enthusiastic individual and an up-and-coming coach who wants to make an impact and continue to build the tradition of Ohio basketball."
During her two years at GVSU, Thorburn helped the Lakers to a combined record of 38-20. The team went 20-10 overall and made an appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament in the 2008-09 season. Thorburn helped mentor Kim Wyngaard to All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team recognition in '08-09, and has coached the last two GLIAC Freshman-of-the-Year award winners.
Before her time at GVSU, Thorburn spent one year as a graduate assistant at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wis. She helped lead the Muskies to a 12-6 record in conference play.
As a player, Thorburn helped the Falcons to a four-year record of 103-25. BGSU won MAC regular-season and tournament titles in each of her final three seasons, making the first Sweet Sixteen appearance in conference women's hoops history in 2006-07. Thorburn finished her career ranking in the top 12 on BGSU's list for 3-pointers made (92) and in the top 10 for single-season 3-point field goal percentage (41 percent).
"I'm honored to be able to be here at Ohio and work with such a knowledgeable coaching staff that understands the game," Thorburn said. "When I came here, I felt like this was a place I really wanted to be. It truly is a privilege to be back in the Mid-American Conference."
A native of Mason, Mich., Thorburn received her bachelor's degree in Education/Planned Program from BGSU in 2007 and recently completed her master's degree in Adult and Higher Education from GVSU.
Achter's hiring was announced on Thursday (June 24) by St. Bonaventure head coach Jim Crowley. A 2008 BGSU graduate, Achter was an All-American at point guard for the Falcons. She helped the Brown and Orange to four consecutive MAC regular-season titles during her tenure, as BGSU had 108 wins and just 23 losses during that time.
BGSU won three-straight MAC Tournament crowns in Achter's first three years, with the 2006-07 NCAA Sweet Sixteen run coming during her junior campaign. The Falcons won 26 games and advanced to the WNIT during her senior year of '07-08.
Achter ranks fourth in BGSU women's basketball scoring history, with 1,580 points, and is the Falcons' all-time leader in assists (688) and free throws (551).
"Kate Achter was the best point guard that I have ever coached against," Crowley said. "She comes from a basketball family and one of the best women's basketball programs in the country. We are very lucky to have someone join our staff with her pedigree, desire, and love for the game."
After college, Achter played professionally for one season with Palaio Faliro in Athens, Greece. She returned to Bowling Green in the winter of 2009 and was a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach. This past season, Achter was a volunteer assistant coach at Pike Delta York High School in Delta, Ohio, and also was a graduate assistant in the Bowling Green athletics development office.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to work in such a well respected program," Achter said. "Coach Crowley is a very highly regarded coach, and I am thankful for the chance to work along side him and his excellent staff."
The hirings of Achter and Thorburn bring the total of Curt Miller's former players in the NCAA Division-I coaching ranks to three. Ali Mann is an assistant coach at IPFW.
