BGSU begins Chris Bergeron Era.
The Bowling Green State University hockey program has announced the schedule for the 2010-11 season. The Falcons, under the direction of first-year head coach Chris Bergeron, will join the University of Michigan to open the season for Central Collegiate Hockey Association institutions and highlight their out-of-conference schedule with invitations into two holiday tournaments.
2010-11 BGSU Hockey Schedule | Ticket information available below
The Falcons will play a total of 16 regular season home games at the newly-renovated BGSU Ice Arena and take their show on the road for 20 additional contests. Included in those home series will be two-game series against Michigan, Alabama-Huntsville, Notre Dame, Miami, Ohio State, Ferris State, Lake Superior State and Northern Michigan. Due to Nebraska-Omaha departing the conference for the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), CCHA cluster play has expanded to include five-team pairings for the regular season and a new 11-team playoff format for postseason play.
All home games will begin at 7:05 p.m. at the BGSU Ice Arena.
The Falcons will travel to the east coast twice during the holiday season, once to the Empire State and also to Connecticut. The team will participate in the 60th annual RPI Holiday Tournament (Troy, N.Y.) immediately after digesting their Thanksgiving turkey dinners on November 26-27. Over the winter break BGSU will travel farther east to play in the UConn Tournament before the turn of the New Year on December 29-30.
To open the campaign and the beginning of the Bergeron Era for BGSU hockey, the Brown and Orange will open up with a home series against the CCHA rival Michigan Wolverines on October 8 and 9. They will then begin to tap into the Bowling Green alumni ties when the team travels to Potsdam, N.Y. to play Clarkson University, led by former Falcon George Roll.
Following their first of two trips to New York state, Bowling Green will travels across the sea and into Alaska to take on the Nanooks of Alaska-Fairbanks (Oct. 29-30). They will return to the BGSU Ice Arena the following week to take on the first part of their assigned cluster, Notre Dame, to open up the month of November.
After a date in Marquette, Mich. for a weekend with the Wildcats of Northern Michigan University the Falcons will return for a much-anticipated series with the Miami RedHawks, Bergeron's former team. Last year the RedHawks spent much of the 2009-10 season ranked as the No. 1 team in the nation and advanced to the Frozen Four (Detroit, Mich.) before falling to eventual National Champion Boston College in the semifinal round.
The Falcons will end the first half of the season with a week on the road against Lake Superior (Dec. 3-4) and then engage in the first matchup between two first-year head coaches when BGSU hosts the Ohio State Buckeyes, now led by head coach Mark Osiecki.
Opening the second half of the conference season the Falcons will play host to the Ferris State Bulldogs on Jan. 7-8 before returning to cluster play with a road trip to Oxford, Ohio (Jan. 14-15). The team will then be rewarded with a bye week.
The BGSU icers return to their home sheet Jan. 28-29 for a weekend set with cluster-mate Lake Superior before the team will make their new home on the road for three of the next four weekends to close out the regular season. A second series featuring two new head coaches will be played when the Falcons head to Kalamazoo, Mich. to play the Jeff Blashill led Western Michigan Broncos, Feb. 4-5. Bowling Green then heads to play inside the Joyce Center one final time against the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame before the Blue and Gold move into a new arena in 2011-12.
To end the regular season the Falcons will split time at home and on the road with their final home series with NMU (Feb. 18-19) and closing the campaign on the road at Michigan State (Feb. 25-26).
The CCHA will administer its new 11-team playoff system this year allowing all teams entry into the postseason tournament. The top five seeded teams will receive first-round byes while the rest of the pool will have a best-of-three series on campus sites beginning March 4. Second round games will also be played on campus sites from March 11-13. The championship will be brought back to Joe Louis Arena, home of the Detroit Red Wings. The CCHA Finals will be played on March 18-19 and the Third-Place Game will precede the Championship Game played on the 19th.
