EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Though Bowling Green (8-15-1) possessed a two-run lead going into the home half of the fourth inning, the Michigan State Spartans (20-5) rallied to score two pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on their way to a 5-2 win on Tuesday evening.
Falcon sophomore Patrick Martin took to the hill for his second start of the season and tossed three innings of scoreless baseball, but the Spartans took advantage of their second time through the order in the fourth. Martin allowed a leadoff single to Ryan Jones and retiring Chris Roberts on a fly out to left field, Torsten Boss doubled in the gap between right and center field, scoring Jones and getting Michigan State on the board. Jordan Keur singled up the middle on a Martin 3-2 offering, tying the game at two. With a runner on, MSU catcher Andy Johnson untied the game with a two-run home run to left center field to give the Spartans a 4-2 lead.
Charles Wooten took over on the bump for Martin after 3.1 innings of work. After walking his first batter faced, Wooten forced two ground outs to end the inning.
Michigan State added another run in the eighth inning off of Patrick O'Brien, the only run the bullpen allowed in the game over the last 4.2 innings of the game, an unearned run after a Falcon error extended the inning.
Bowling Green has a 2-0 lead going into the fourth inning and started the game's scoring in their first at-bat when #T.J. Blanton hit a one-out triple to put himself in prime position to score. Mark Galvin# followed Blanton's triple with a RBI single to give the Falcons 1-0 lead.
Three innings later, Bowling Green added to its lead when Galvin began the inning with a single up the middle followed by Derek Spencer reaching base on an error. With runners on second and third with one out, Dennis Vaughn returned to the lineup and drove in a run with a ground out to the right side, scoring Galvin from third.
Patrick Martin took the loss, but pitched three solid innings in his second start of the season. After a one-two-three first inning, Martin allowed only two in his next two innings of worked and escaped a third inning jam with Spartan runners on second and third base with only one out.
With Blanton's first inning triple, he extends his hitting streak to 18 games, continuing to increase his career-high and mounting the longest active hitting streak in the conference. Blanton finished 2-for-4 on the day with a walk and a run scored. Galvin also finished the day with two hits and a run scored, adding an RBI to his total line.
Bowling Green drops to 8-15-1 on the season, overall and their conference record remains 2-4. They will put that record on the line this weekend when the 2009 MAC West regular season champion Ball State Cardinals (11-16, 5-1) this weekend at Warren E. Steller Field. Friday's game time is set for 3 p.m. ET.
