Madeline Wideman Named to MAC All-Freshman Team
November 05, 2010 | Women's Soccer
First-year Falcon scored 11 points, including nine in conference play.
Bowling Green State University women's soccer standout Madeline Wideman has been named to the Mid-American Conference's All-Freshman Team for 2010. The All-MAC teams were announced at the MAC Tournament banquet on Thursday night (Nov. 4).
A native of Troy, Mich. (Troy H.S.), Wideman was one of five BGSU players -- and the only freshman -- to start all 20 matches for the Falcons in 2010. She tied for second on the team in scoring, with 11 points.
Wideman had three goals, the third-highest total on the Falcons, and she tied for second on the team with five assists. Nine of her points (three goals, three assists), came in MAC play, ranking her second on the team in scoring in conference contests.
Wideman had three three-point games on the season, picking up a goal and an assist in the Buffalo (Sept. 24), Eastern Michigan (Oct. 1) and Akron (Oct. 15) matches. Two of her assists came on game-winning goals, in games vs. UB and Indiana State (Sept. 19).
In the ISU match, Wideman had an assist on sophomore Sarah VonderBrink's GWG late in the contest. And, her assist on junior Alyssa Zuccaro's first goal against UB held up as the game-winner.
Wideman's first collegiate point had come on BG's first goal of the season, Zuccaro's score in the Cincinnati match of Aug. 22.

As mentioned, the MAC announced the all-conference teams and specialty awards as well as the all-freshman squad on Thursday. The awards were the results of voting by the league's 12 head coaches.
The Offensive Player-of-the-Year honor went to Western Michigan forward Stephanie Skowneski. The junior from Clinton Township, Mich. is tied for the conference lead in goals with nine, is first in shots (64) and sits second in points (22). After being voted to the All-Freshman team in 2008, this is her first time being named to the All-MAC First Team.
The Defensive Player-of-the-Year award went to Monique Budani. The Eastern Michigan goalkeeper led the MAC in saves on the season with 146, 50 more than the second place finisher in that category. The senior also had seven shutouts to her credit and ended her season with a goals against average of just 1.03.
Toledo's Rachel MacLeod was named the MAC's Freshman of the Year. The forward from Westerville, Ohio has found the back of the net five times for the conference co-champion thus far, starting 17 of the Rockets' 20 games.
Joining MacLeod in earning individual honors from the Toledo squad was head coach Brad Evans. The 10th year head coach at UT wins the award for the first time in his career after leading his team to a 15-3-2 record so far on the season.
Central Michigan had four players named to the All-MAC First Team, including forward Laura Twidle, midfielder Valerie Prause, and defenders Liesel Toth and Bailey Brandon. They were joined by UT's Erin Flynn and Kristen Lynn, EMU's duo of Budani and forward Paige Sheridan, WMU's Skowneski and midfielder Nicole Dulyea, and defenders Mo Smunt of Northern Illinois and Sarah Brown of Ohio.
Miami had four second-team members, including forward Giselle Mangal, midfielders Katy Dolesh and Kayla Zakrzewski and defender Brooke Livingston. Other second-team selections included the UT trio of Vicki Traven, Brittany Hensler and Rachael Kravitz, EMU's Stephanie Clarke and Julie Kaim, WMU's Nikkolette Rivera and Ball State's Missy Gordon.
CMU had three All-Freshman Team selections, including Estee Outcalt, Nicole Samuel and Kaely Schlosser. Miami had two of its all-MAC second team members also named to the All-Freshman squad in Dolesh and Zakrzewski. In addition to Wideman, the rest of the freshmen honored were EMU's Clarke, Jessacca Gironda of Kent State, Kelly DeNiro of Akron and Mattie Liston of Ohio.
