BGSU to add Hoekstra, Hulls, Matthews, Ogle and Pastor for 2011-12 academic year
Bowling Green State University women's basketball coach Curt Miller has announced the signing of five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Deborah Hoekstra (East Lansing, Mich.), Kaila Hulls (Bloomington, Ind.), Jasmine Matthews (Matteson, Ill.), Shanique Ogle (Lorain, Ohio) and Logan Pastor (Uniontown, Ohio) will join the Falcon program for the 2011-12 academic year.

“We are very excited about the announcement of our five-member 2011 recruiting class,” said Miller. “This will be the first class of recruits that will play their entire career in the new Stroh Center. All five are outstanding players and more importantly fantastic young women that excel in the classroom. I am proud that they have chosen to become members of the Falcon family and they will do a great job representing our program and BGSU.”
Hoekstra, a 5-10 guard, is currently in her senior year at East Lansing High School, under coach Rob Smith. She attended Lansing Eastern H.S. for three years prior to enrolling at East Lansing for the 2010-11 school year. Hoekstra was named to the Class A all-state team after averaging 20.6 points, 8.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 4.3 steals per game as a junior for coach Al Darden at Eastern.
Hoekstra (pronounced HOKE-struh) has scored in double digits in each of her first three seasons, averaging 13.2 points per game as a freshman and 19.4 ppg in her sophomore season. In her sophomore year, she averaged a double-double, pulling down 11.0 rebounds per contest. Hoekstra was ranked as the third-best shooting guard and the eighth-best overall player in the state by Michigan Lady Ballers Insider Scouting Service. She has also earned three letters in volleyball and two in track to date, and was an all-conference selection in volleyball in her junior year. Hoekstra has played AAU ball for Team Detroit and Midland Fastbreak.
“Deborah is considered one of the premier shooters in the Midwest,” said Miller. “She is consistently ranked as one of the Top 10 players in Michigan in her class. She has deep range and a very quick release. Deborah has good athleticism and length which has helped her be a productive rebounding guard during high school. Deborah was the last piece of this recruiting class, committing after the summer evaluation period.”
Hulls, a 5-11 guard/forward, currently attends Bloomington South H.S. She was named to the All-Indiana First Team by Hoosier Basketball Magazine as both a sophomore and a junior, and also earned Associated Press all-state honorable mention last season. Hulls has been an all-conference selection (Conference Indiana) in each of her first three years, and has also garnered all-area honors three times to date.
Last season, Hulls averaged 16.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, and she also had over three steals and two assists per contest. Hulls and the Panthers of head coach Larry Winters have advanced to the state's round of 16 in each of the last two years. She has played AAU ball for the Bloomington Shooters and Indiana Elite South. Her brother, Jordan, is a member of the men's basketball team at Indiana University.
“Kaila is one of the best shooting forwards in the entire Midwest,” said Miller. “She has tremendous basketball IQ and really understands how to play the game. Kaila is fundamental and has skills of a wing player, but is strong and rugged enough to be a perfect 4-player within our system. She will be a great addition and helps bring some young toughness into the program. Kaila has the opportunity to be named an Indiana All-Star at the end of this season marking her as one of the best players in the state.”
Matthews, a 5-9 guard, attends Marian Catholic H.S. in Chicago Heights, Ill. She averaged 11.5 ppg for the Spartans of coach Annie Basic a year ago, helping the team to a 27-8 record and a Class 4A supersectional. Marian Catholic has posted an overall record of 80-19 in her first three years at the school.
Matthews was named to the IBCA All-State Fourth Team a year ago, and also earned all-area honors. She has played AAU ball for Chicago Hoops Express.
“Jasmine is a talented wing player, and is the first signee from the greater Chicago area during our tenure at BGSU,” said Miller. “We believe she has the ability to be a lockdown defender while thriving offensively in our pick and roll schemes. Jasmine has been an outstanding leader and a consistent winner during her career. She plays at the prestigious Marian Catholic High School and for an outstanding summer travel team.”
Ogle, a 6-0 post player, is in her senior year at Lorain H.S. She is in her first season at the school after spending three years at Lorain Southview (Southview and Admiral King have been combined to form Lorain H.S. in 2010-11). As a junior at Southview, she earned All-Ohio Third-Team honors after averaging 18.6 points and 10 rebounds per game. Ogle helped the Saints of coach Scott Plzak to a 16-6 record and the school's first district championship since 2003, surpassing the 1,000-point mark for her career in the process. Her coach at Lorain is Mark Feldmann.
In addition to basketball, Ogle will also have earned four letters in both volleyball and track by the time she graduates. She finished sixth in the state in the discus as a junior. Ogle has played AAU ball for Branum's Hoopstars.
“Shanique was the first member of the 2011 recruiting class to commit to BGSU,” said Miller. “She is a powerful and explosive post player. We knew we wanted Shanique to be a part of our extended family after the first time we saw her play. Shanique's attitude and positive energy are contagious. Shanique was a hidden gem on the recruiting circuit and we are fortunate that she committed to us before other powerhouse programs saw her play.”
Pastor, a 5-9 guard, is in her senior year at Green H.S., having helped the Bulldogs to an overall record of 61-15 in her first three years. Last season, Pastor averaged 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists per game for coach Tony Whitmer, helping the team to a 23-4 record, a Suburban League championship and a district title. She earned first-team all-district and All-Ohio Special Mention honors in her junior year.
Pastor helped the Bulldogs to district runner-up finishes in both her freshman and sophomore seasons. She was ranked as the fifth-best senior guard and the 11th-best overall senior in the state by Ohio Girls Basketball Report. Pastor has earned three letters in volleyball and two in softball, earning all-league honors in the former. Pastor, a three-year captain of the basketball team, also captained the volleyball team for two years. She has played AAU ball for Berea Fastbreak and the SMAC organization.
“Logan is a huge addition to the Falcon program,” said Miller. “She was heavily recruited out of Green High School while being considered one of the best guards in Ohio and the entire Midwest. We believe she has a chance to become an outstanding point guard within our system but has the versatility to play all three guard positions. Logan is a leader and will have the opportunity to impact our program immediately. She is a tremendous competitor and has a strong will to win.”
Hoekstra, Hulls, Matthews, Ogle and Pastor will join Alexis Rogers in their first playing seasons in 2011-12. Rogers, a 6-1 post player who played one year at Duke University, is sitting out the 2010-11 campaign due to NCAA transfer rules.
“The addition of these five signees, along with Alexis Rogers becoming eligible, will give us a talented group of newcomers to start the Stroh Center Era,” said Miller.
“My assistant coaches are tireless workers and do a fantastic job of attracting top talent to BGSU. Jennifer Roos, Brandi Poole and Kevin Eckert are the keys behind our successful recruiting each year, including this outstanding class.”
The Falcons, winners of six consecutive Mid-American Conference regular-season titles and four of the last six MAC Tournament crowns, open the 2010-11 campaign on Friday night (Nov. 12) at the University of Evansville. BGSU will begin the home portion of the schedule on Monday (Nov. 15), hosting Creighton University at venerable Anderson Arena.
