Falcons Win MAC Opener Over Northern Illinois

Bowling Green, Ohio - Breanne Guy took medalist honors and the Bowling Green gymnastics team opened Mid-American Conference action by defeating Northern Illinois 192.625-190.900 Sunday afternoon in Anderson Arena.
A year ago, Northern Illinois finished third at the MAC Championships and Bowling Green ended just a notch behind in fourth, but the Falcons led from the beginning Sunday. BGSU set the tone with a 48.500 on the vault and followed with a 48.150 on the uneven bars to lead by .700 heading into the final two rotations.
The Falcons stumbled a bit on the beam with a 47.150 and Northern Illinois momentarily took the lead with a 47.975 on the floor. But Bowling Green bounced back with a strong 48.825 on the floor to seal the match.
Guy posted scores of at least 9.700 in three of the four rotations, including a 9.800 on the balance beam. She added a 9.725 on the vault, a 9.700 in the floor excercise and a 9.650 on the bars.
In other strong individual performances, Danielle Wishart's 9.825 was the best score of the meet on the vault and Sunny Marchand's 9.750 was third. Amber Brewer won the uneven bars with a 9.750 and Kasey Fillmore was second with a 9.725. The Falcons swept the top three scores on the beam with Guy's 9.800 taking first, followed by a 9.700 from Megan Chronister and a 9.650 by Queenita Gamble. Wishart posted the best score of the meet on the floor with a 9.850 and Marchand's 9.800 tied for second.
Northern Illinois falls to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in MAC with the loss. Bowling Green improves to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in MAC competition and will look to move to 2-0 next Sunday at Western Michigan at 1:00 p.m.
