Head Baseball Coach to Remain Through 2013

The Bowling Green State University Athletic Department has announced that baseball head coach Danny Schmitz has agreed to a three-year contract extention through 2013.
Only months removed from guiding the Bowling Green baseball team to its second consecutive Mid-American Conference regular-season championship, the BGSU Athletic Department has announced that head baseball coach Danny Schmitz has agreed to a contract extension through the year 2013.
Of the signing, Schmitz said, “This is truly humbling. I have been very fortunate to be a part of the Falcon baseball family over the past 19 years. Winning back-to-back regular season championships is a credit to our young men, our coaches and our alumni. I would personally like to thank Athletic Director Greg Christopher and Senior Associate Athletic Director Janna Blais for all their support and confidence in me. Next to my family, being a Falcon is something I am the most grateful for.”
"We are excited about the direction of Falcon Baseball,” said Christopher. Danny has done a terrific job building and sustaining our program over 19 years, including back-to-back MAC titles in 2008 and 2009. Danny, Rick [Blanc] and Spencer [Schmitz] all deserve credit for their efforts. Beyond the on-the-field success, we also appreciate how Danny runs his program and develops our student-athletes."
Over the last two years, Schmitz has led his teams to back-to-back MAC East regular season titles. In 2008, the team was crowned MAC regular-season champions with a 32-20 overall record (16-8, MAC). In 2009, the Falcons edged out Ohio and Kent State for the top spot in the MAC East with an 18-8 conference ledger and another season with at least 25 victories.
During the 2009 campaign, Schmitz garnered his 500th career victory after the Falcons' 8-3 win over the Michigan Wolverines on March 31. He is now only the fifth coach to reach this mark in Mid-American Conference history. At year's end, he was also named the 2009 MAC Coach of the Year, the third time he has been awarded the honor.
In his 19 seasons at the top of the Falcon dugout, Schmitz holds a 517-463-4 lifetime overall record and a 265-252-1 record against Mid-American Conference competition. He is fourth overall in both lifetime and conference wins by a MAC head coach ahead of former Eastern Michigan coach, Dean Kreiner (1986-98).
He has led four different Falcon squads to MAC regular-season titles (1995, 2002, 2008, 2009), six to MAC East titles (1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2008, 2009) and won the MAC Tournament twice (1998, 1999). He was named the MAC Coach of the Year in back-to-back seasons in 1994 and 1995 before being awarded the honor a third time in 2009.
A coach who is widely recognized for developing players, Schmitz has had four All-Americans, two MAC Players of the Year, six draft picks, and six other players sign as free agents since 2000.
During his tenure at BGSU, Schmitz has had 26 players drafted or sign professional contracts. Most notably, those names include major-leaguer Andy Tracy (1993-96), who was a member of the Philadelphia Phillies squad that captured the 2008 World Championship. Burke Badenhop (2002-05) was named the Tigers' minor league Pitcher of the Year in 2007 before being traded to Florida the following off-season. He made his major league debut on April 9, 2008. He made eight starts and had 13 appearances in his first season in the majors. Nolan Reimold (2003-05) played in the 2006 All-Star Futures Game and is currently starting in the outfield for the Baltimore Orioles.
