LaMonta Stone Named A Top Mid-Major Assistant
July 06, 2009 | Men's Basketball
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University men's basketball assistant coach LaMonta Stone was named one of the top 25 Mid-Major Assistant Coaches in the country by www.collegeinsider.com.
College Insider's Jason Belzer compiled the list and placed Stone at No. 15, the highest ranking of two Mid-American Conference assistant coaches on the list. He joined the Bowling Green staff under former head coach Dan Dakich and has now served as an assistant coach for the first two seasons of Louis Orr's tenure.
Stone helped lead the program to the Mid-American Conference Eastern Division title in 2008-09 and the top seed for the MAC Tournament. The Falcons advanced to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) where the team lost a hard-fought 73-71 opening round game to top seed Creighton on the road in one of the more hostile environments in the country.
Under Orr and Stone, the 2008-09 team became a mentally tough unit, winning six consecutive road conference games and finishing 19-14, a six-win improvement over the previous season.
In his first season at Bowling Green, Stone helped produce a similar turnaround. The 2004-05 squad went 18-11, a four-win improvement over the previous season. The team advanced to the second round of the MAC Tournament that season, beating Ball State 74-72 in the first round.
A native of Detroit, Stone came to Bowling Green after serving two seasons as an assistant at Ohio State under Jim O'Brien. He was also an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan for two years, working under Jim Boone.
