BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — With Kent State University and Bowling Green State University set to celebrate their respective centennials in the upcoming months, the universities have decided to commemorate 100 years of competition by going head-to-head in a friendly rivalry called the Centennial Cup Challenge.
"As we look around the MAC and specifically the cornerstone institutions in Ohio, Bowling Green has a common history with our founding in 1910," KSU Director of Athletics Laing Kennedy said. "It is very appropriate for us to celebrate our centennials together through our intercollegiate athletic programs and to have the Centennial Cup be the centerpiece. We hope that this can become an annual competition that celebrates the comprehensive athletic programs at both universities."
"We are excited about the Centennial Cup Challenge," Bowling Green Athletics Director Greg Christopher said. "It's an opportunity to further the connection between two great institutions with proud traditions. I know that our student-athletes, coaches and fans will rally around the challenge when the Falcons and Golden Flashes face each other. The Centennial Cup will add to a strong rivalry and we hope it's something that will continue long-term."
Beginning with the football and volleyball contests slated for Oct. 10, 2009 as part of KSU's Homecoming, the competition will run through the remainder of the 2009-10 academic year before concluding with the 2010 football game at Bowling Green. Two points will be awarded for the head-to-head competitions in football, men's & women's basketball, softball and volleyball; and three in baseball. The other eight sports will be worth one point each.
Points are awarded in a winner-take-all fashion, with the school winning each head-to-head meeting or earning the higher Mid-American Conference receiving all points for the given contest. Should the teams tie a regular season contest or achieve the same placing in a MAC Championship, the point will be split. Potential postseason (tournament) play will be considered when determining the final total, with a point being awarded for each head-to-head meeting in MAC Tournament action. A minimum of 21 points is at stake in the rivalry series.
The winning school will be presented with the Centennial Cup at that school's home men's basketball game against the Cup runner-up in the early part of 2011.
