July 22, 2009 | General
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University has announced that the groundbreaking ceremony for the Stroh Center will take place Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. This event is open to the public.
The $36 million facility will be a state-of-the-art venue for concerts, commencement, lectures, and numerous campus and community events, and serve as the home for Falcon men's and women's basketball and volleyball programs. It will be built in the current Lot 6 parking area on campus near I-75 and Wooster Street, and is scheduled to open in time for the 2011-12 season.
The facility is named after Kerm and Mary Lu Stroh, who provided an $8 million gift to the school, of which $7.7 million will go to the Stroh Center, the largest single donation in school history. Bill Frack provided $2 million and the court will be named Frack Court, while Allen Schmidthorst's $1.7 million gift will fund the Schmidthorst Pavilion, which will house the team and practice area. Larry Miles also presented a $1 million gift for construction of the practice court, which will be named the Court of Champions.
Nicknamed “The House That Roars”, Anderson arena was built in 1960 and has been the home of the men's and women's basketball and volleyball teams. The club area in the new facility will be named the Anderson Club Area to continue to remember the legacy of Harold “Andy” Anderson, who went 367-193 in 21 seasons as the men's basketball coach at Bowling Green.
The groundbreaking ceremony will take place prior to Bowling Green's football season opener against Troy at Doyt Perry Stadium, which begins at 7 p.m.
