Bowling Green State University women’s basketball coach Curt Miller has announced the addition of Danielle Havel to the program. Havel, a transfer from DePaul University, will sit out the 2009-10 season per NCAA regulations, and will retain three seasons of eligibility.
“Danielle will be a tremendous addition to BGSU and our basketball family,” said head coach Curt Miller. “She is an outstanding player with the versatility to play three positions for the Falcons. Danielle is a proven winner, a productive rebounder, and has a high basketball IQ.”
Havel, a 6-2 forward, is a native of Carmel, Ind. She played in 28 games off the bench as a freshman at DePaul in 2008-09, helping the Blue Demons to a 23-10 overall record, a 10-6 Big East Conference mark and a trip to the NCAA Championships.
Havel averaged 0.9 points and 2.6 rebounds per game, playing 10.9 minutes per contest for the Blue Demons. Over the last four games of the year, however, she averaged 23.5 minutes per game. That stretch included a pair of conference tournament games as well as the NCAA first-round contest against San Diego State.
Havel scored seven points, the highest total of her collegiate career, in one of those games, an overtime win over West Virginia in the league tourney. She also tied her career best with a team-leading seven rebounds in that game. Havel led the Blue Demons in rebounding in four games on the season.
At DePaul’s end-of-season banquet, Havel was a co-recipient of the team’s Most Improved Player award.
Havel, a four-year starter at Carmel H.S., finished her career as the school’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder. She teamed with incoming BGSU freshman Chrissy Steffen to help the Greyhounds to a 23-4 record and the IHSSA Class 4A state title in her senior year. Havel had a double-double in the championship-game win, with 16 points and 14 rebounds. She was an all-state selection, and tied for third in the voting for Indiana’s Miss Basketball.
“Danielle was our top power forward recruit in the Class of 2008,” said Miller. “She is not only a great player, but a person with outstanding character. She has the potential to be a team leader, and will be a great addition to our championship lockerroom.
“Danielle has a chance to make a huge impact in our conference."
Havel’s cousin, Madeline Means, was a four-year letterwinner on the BGSU volleyball team.
As mentioned, Havel will sit out the 2009-10 season at BGSU, and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
In 2009-10, Miller and his staff will welcome back 10 letterwinners from last season’s 29-win team, plus a pair of Division-I transfers who sat out the 2008-09 campaign. The ’08-09 Falcons won the Mid-American Conference regular-season title for the fifth consecutive year and advanced to the third round of the WNIT.
