Box score
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Falcon hockey team headed north to Big Rapids, Mich. in order to complete a four game road trip. To close out the roadie, Bowling Green (0-5-1, 0-1-1-1) entered Ewigleben Ice Arena to play the Ferris State Bulldogs (5-3-0, 0-2-0-0).
The Bulldogs, who act as the most penalized team in the CCHA, wasted no time continuing that trend after being called for too many men on the ice. The Falcons would come up short with the two minute man advantage having all of their shots on goal put down by FSU sophomore goaltender Taylor Nelson.
Bowling Green was penalized three times in the first period alone, but freshman goalie Andrew Hammond and the Falcon defense stood their ground shutting out the Bulldog power play. Hammond would close out with ten total saves in the period as his adversary finished with seven ending in a scoreless opening frame.
The zeroes on the scoreboard did not last long as with less than a minute into the second period the Falcons took an early 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs. Streaking down the ice on a broken two-on-one opportunity, BG forwards Kai Kantola and Jordan Samuels-Thomas beat the coverage and charged the net. Kantola's first shot on Nelson bounced off the goaltender's padding and Samuels-Thomas rammed it home with a back hand off the rebound on the even-strength goal. Bowling Green 1, Ferris State 0.
Second period goal scoring continued but this time on the other end of the stick as Ferris State tied the game up at the 7:51 mark off a power play strike from Blair Riley. The Bulldog offense up one man tossed the puck around the ice and found an open Riley who cracked the game-tying score past Hammond.
Ferris State was not satisfied with one score. Less than a minute and a half later freshman center Travis Ouellette scored his third goal of the season on another FSU power play to take a 2-1 lead over the Falcons early in the second period. Ouellette took advantage of a BGSU turnover by Kyle Page at center ice, taking the puck down the near side of the rink and launching a slap shot to beat Hammond glove-side.
On the Bulldogs' third consecutive power play chance of the second period, FSU would strike again with their third power play goal of the period. Matthew Kirzinger scored off of a nice setup by Aaron Lewicki and Brett Wysopal for his third goal of the season to give Ferris State a 3-1 advantage. All three goals were scored on the power play and within a five minute frame.
Ferris State continued to press the Falcon defense in the second period after scoring their fourth goal with 4:03 remaining in the second frame. Kirzinger got back into the scoring act as he set up Justin Menke for his second goal of the season, giving the Bulldogs a commanding 4-1 lead. Despite the four unanswered goals for FSU, the Falcons outshot the Bulldogs 12-9 in the period.
After the FSU goal, junior goaltender Nick Eno came onto the ice to relieve Hammond after saving 14 shots in 35:57. Eno stopped the only second period shot he faced.
Beginning the third period of play, Bowling Green committed two penalties within the first minute to give Ferris State a five-on-three power play chance. The Bulldogs cashed in 00:17 after the two man advantage was announced when Riley's second goal of the contest. The fifth FSU score was the fourth consecutive power play goal scored in the contest.
Despite both teams having 19 shots on goal after two periods of action, Ferris State pulled away in the shot column. The Bulldogs put an additional 16 shots on Eno in the third as opposed to the Falcons' four. The Falcons Achilles heel was penalties as BG finished Friday night having committed 12 penalties for 24 minutes. Ferris State ended having converted on four-of-eleven power play chances while Bowling Green went 0-5.
The loss puts BGSU at 0-6-1 (0-2-1-1) for the season going into tomorrow evening's contest with the Bulldogs (4-2-0, 1-2-0-0). Game time is set for 5:05 p.m. at the Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. where the Falcons look to avenge the Friday night 5-1 loss.
