BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green hockey team earned its first win of the 2009-10 season Friday night after completing a 3-1 victory over the Alaska Nanooks. The Falcons featured hardnosed defense accompanied with precision shooting and superb goaltending to pull out their first victory under interim head coach Dennis Williams.
After dropping a two-game series to the Ferris State Bulldogs last weekend, the Falcons opened up the offense quickly by scoring the game's opening goal for the third consecutive game. In the second minute of the game, Falcons freshman forward Jordan Samuels-Thomas struck gold for the fourth time this season while cleaning up a loose puck in front of the Nanook net. With traffic mounting in front of the keeper, Scott Greenham, a clean backhand by Samuels-Thomas gave the Falcons the 1-0 advantage just 2:47 into the contest. Seniors Kai Kantola and Tommy Dee would be credited with assists.
It would take nearly 25 minutes for another goal to be scored, but the Nanooks tied the game at one apiece at 7:11 in the second period on a deflected shot that found the back of the Falcons cage. Scott Enders sent the puck towards Falcon goaltender Nick Eno only to have it deflected before his eyes by team-leading scorer Dion Knelsen. Floating over Eno's right shoulder, the game tying goal crossed the red line to nod the game up at one.
The Falcons avenged the tying goal with another score in the twelfth minute of the second period. Josh Boyd sent a forceful shot from the left wing screaming passed the UAF goalie, Greenham, to put the Falcons on top 2-1. On the play, freshman Jerry Freismuth was awarded the second assist, good for his first collegiate point of his career. The Falcons did not relinquish the lead for the duration of the game.
Half way through the third period, the Nanooks committed back-to-back UAF penalties by former Bowling Green Falcon Ryan Hohl and Ron Meyers created a 5-on-3 power play chance for the Falcons. With the two man advantage, the barrage of Bowling Green shots intensified on Greenham. Despite the Nanook defense knocking down multiple shot attempts from the top of both circles, senior Tommy Dee found a hole in Greenham's defenses. Dee knocked home a Tomas Petruska deflected shot off of the goaltender's pads. With Dee's score, the Falcons took the lead 3-1 mid-way through the third period.
The Falcon defense stood strong, led by junior goaltender Nick Eno and his 24 saves on the evening. After the deflected goal scored by Knelsen in the second period, Eno held the Nanooks scoreless for more than 32 minutes as the final buzzer sounded, signaling the Falcon victory. He had only played in one contest against UAF in his career going back to Feb. 9, 2008 where he saved 24 of 27 shots in a 4-1 loss. He registers his first win of the season and his first win since March 7, 2008 against Lake Superior State as a freshman.
Tomas Petruska had two points, both on assists on the night. That is Petruska's second consecutive multiple point game, having scored three assists and a goal in the last two games. He now has seven career multiple point games. Dee ended the series opener with two points (1-1) as well, his third multi-point game of his career. With two points tonight, Dee now has recorded more points against UAF than any of his Bowling Green teammates (5).
With the win against Alaska, interim head coach Dennis Williams now has career wins at the Division I and III collegiate hockey level as a team's head coach. From 2004-06, Williams was the head coach at Division III Neumann College where he went 35-32-8 in three years at the helm. He earns his first win as a Falcon head coach and first win as a head coach since Feb. 24, 2007 when his Golden Knights defeated Utica College, 2-1.
Bowling Green improves to 1-7-1 (1-3-1-1) overall and gains three points in the conference standings with the conference win, also a season first. They now stand ninth overall in the CCHA with five points earned in conference play, one point behind the No. 6 Michigan Wolverines.
The Falcon win snaps an eight game winless streak, tied for the longest in school history. The only time BGSU began a season with eight games without a win, the 1981-82 Falcons placed first in the CCHA. The Falcons and the Nanooks now stand at a deadlock with 20 wins each in the series, accompanied with five ties between the two squads.
Saturday night's game will tilt the series in the favor of the winner, set to begin at 7:35 p.m. EST at the BGSU Ice Arena. Complete coverage of the game will be provided at BGSUFALCONS.com.
