OMAHA, Neb. - After a night where victory lingered in the balance of controversy, the Bowling Green Falcons (0-4-1, 0-0-1-1) followed their shoot out victory over the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks (3-0-2, 0-0-1-0) with the series finale at Qwest Center Omaha Saturday night.
The first eighteen minutes would feature a defensive deadlock as shots on goal were hard to come by. Nebraska Omaha and Bowling Green put the clamps on the opposing teams' offense. Bowling Green successfully killed three consecutive Maverick power plays before the fourth UNO power play chance hurt the Falcons. Streaking down the ice, the Mavericks set up their offense in front of freshman Falcon goaltender Andrew Hammond. From the left post, junior winger Rich Purslow found a hole underneath the arm of Hammond to take the first lead of the game, 1-0.
Bowling Green limited the Mavericks to nine shots in the first frame, the fewest the Mavs had put on goal all series long in a twenty minute stretch. The Falcons returned fire with five shots on senior UNO goalie Jeremie Dupont.
Period number two was a near replica of the previous. Defense and hard hitting was the feature of the first 19 minutes of the second period. Bowling Green had an opportunity of their own after Eric Olimb (Jr., D) was sent to the penalty box following an interference call with 1:56 remaining. The Falcons squandered the opportunity after senior Tomas Petruska committed a penalty, a two-minute cross check with an additional ten-minute game misconduct penalty. The momentum switched sides after the call and the Mavericks would crash Hammond at the net hard while on the four-on-four. Sprinting down the ice, All-CCHA Preseason selection Eddie DelGrosso (Sr., D) simply beat Hammond top shelf for another UNO score. This marked the fifth goal allowed by the Falcons in the last two minutes of a period this season.
By contrast, the third period's first three minutes would feature two goals scored within 30 seconds of each other. Bowling Green put a mark on the board when freshman Jordan Samuels-Thomas on a rebound in front of Dupont, scoring his second goal of the season. The score stood at 2-1, but not for long. A half minute following the Falcon goal, UNO's Purslow would strike the back of the net for the second time in the game on a perfectly executed cross pass from Jeric Agosta (Sr., C). Nebraska Omaha 3, Bowling Green 1 at 17:37 in the third period.
The next 13:37 would remain a defensive struggle as neither team found much success getting the puck on goal in that time. At the 2:27 marker, Hammond made a fantastic pad save facing a two-on-one UNO advantage in front of the net to prevent a larger lead.
Time would dwindle down to the last minute of play with Bowling Green having limited opportunities in the Maverick zone. The Falcons wanted to pull Hammond out of the net for a man advantage but could not until there were merely 27 seconds left on the clock. With a six-on-five chance on its way after a BG timeout, a bull rush followed as Brian Potacco and Kai Kantola put four shots on Dupont, all resulting in saves. The horn sounded with the final reading UNO 3, BGSU 1.
Bowling Green did not score on any of their three power play chances in Saturday night's loss, while the opposition scored once in six chances. Over the course of the weekend, the Falcons finished 1-for-9 and UNO finished 3-for-12 on the power play for the weekend.
Seven different Falcons recorded points over the two day span, with Samuels-Thomas (2-0) and Nathan Pageau (1-1) leading the way with two a piece. Three Falcons bore honors as Perani Stars of the Game over the weekend. Hammond (career-high 43 saves) and Pageau were selected for Friday night's game while Samuels-Thomas got the nod Saturday night.
The Falcons will regoup during the week and prepare for a road trip to Big Rapids, Mich. for another weekend series away from northwest Ohio. Bowling Green will play a pair with the Ferris State Bulldogs to continue conference play on Friday, Nov. 6, and Saturday, Nov. 7. Game times are set for 7:05 p.m. and 5:05 p.m., respectively.
