Jennifer Roos Receives Contract Extension
October 13, 2009 | Women's Basketball
Bowling Green State University women's basketball associate head coach Jennifer Roos has received a two-year contract extension, BGSU Assistant Vice President/Director of Athletics Greg Christopher and Senior Associate AD/SWA Janna Blais have announced. Roos' contract, which runs parallel with head coach Curt Miller's contract, now runs through June 30, 2015.
“Jennifer is simply an outstanding coach. Her loyalty to BGSU and her desire to continue to improve our women's basketball program made this an easy decision,” said Blais. “We are thrilled that Jennifer chooses to share her experience, talent, and impeccable character with our student-athletes, our staff, and our community.”
Roos, Miller's first hire in 2001, has helped build a perennial power in her eight years on campus. The Falcons have an overall record of 179-73 in that time. After a 9-19 record in the current staff's first season (2001-02) and a 12-16 mark in the second, Miller, Roos and the Falcons are 158-38 overall (80.6%) and 83-13 (86.5%) in Mid-American Conference regular-season play over the last six seasons.
"I would like to thank BGSU, and Greg Christopher, Janna Blais and Curt Miller in particular," said Roos. “They have given me an incredible opportunity within the women's basketball program. I have been very fortunate to work with very high-caliber student-athletes and great coaches throughout my eight years here at BGSU.
“BGSU has some of the most loyal basketball fans around, and I am very proud to be a part of continuing the tradition of BGSU women's basketball.”
After three years as an assistant coach with the Falcons, Roos was elevated to associate head coach in the summer of 2004. Since that time, the Falcons have won the Mid-American Conference regular-season title in every season, and have made five consecutive trips to national postseason play.
Roos is in charge of the Falcon defense, and also serves as the team's recruiting coordinator.
“Jennifer is one of the best assistant coaches in the country, and has been my co-pilot since we arrived in 2001,” said Miller. “Jennifer is involved in every single decision within our program, and she is a huge reason why we have built a championship program. She is a talented defensive coordinator and recruiter, but what separates herself from many assistant coaches is the respect she earns from the players she coaches.
“I want to thank the BGSU administration for extending Jennifer's contract. They were not afraid to think outside the box, and they realize that good assistant coaches can be the backbone of a successful program. I have been blessed to have my entire coaching staff alongside me since 2002.”
In June of 2008, Roos became the first assistant coach in the history of the BGSU women's basketball program to receive a multi-year contract.
In May of 2009, Roos was named one of five national winners of the “Rising Star” Award, presented by BasketballScoop.com. The awards recognized those assistant coaches who are some of the best in the business, as determined by their peers.
The Falcons have posted six consecutive seasons of over 20 wins. BGSU won both the MAC's regular-season and tournament titles in three-straight years, capped by a 2006-07 season which saw the Falcons go 31-4 and become the first women's team in MAC history to advance to the NCAA's "Sweet Sixteen." The Falcons downed Oklahoma State and Vanderbilt in the national tournament to advance to the round of 16.
The Falcons have won the MAC regular-season title in each of the last five years, and have advanced to the Postseason WNIT two consecutive seasons. BGSU's 26-8 mark in the 2007-08 season included a first-round win in the postseason tourney.
Last season, the Falcons went 29-5, posting the second-highest win total in MAC women's basketball history (behind only the '06-07 BGSU team). The 2008-09 Falcons received a first-round bye in the Postseason WNIT and defeated Syracuse in the second round before falling to Indiana.
Over the last five years, the Falcons have a record of 72-8 (90.0%) in MAC regular-season play, including a 59-5 (92.2%) mark over the last four seasons. That includes a perfect 16-0 league record in 2005-06 and 15-1 marks in both '06-07 and '08-09.
Roos came to the Falcon program after spending eight years at Davidson College, her alma mater. She became a coach with the Wildcats upon her graduation from the school. A native of Louisville, Ky., she graduated from Davidson in 1993. Roos was inducted into the Davidson Athletics Hall of Fame.
The Falcons begin the 2009-10 season by participating in the Preseason WNIT. BGSU will host Chicago State in first-round action on November 13.
